Wyvern Lord / Wyvern Lady

The Wyvern Lord, or Wyvern Lady, is the highest sovereign title in the Dranian hierarchy, bestowed upon the individual elected by the Elector Princes of Drania to serve as the ruler of the entire realm. Though technically a first among equals, the Wyvern Lord holds sweeping powers in times of crisis, commands the royal wyvern guard, and oversees the court of Dragness. The title derives from the earliest human legends of the "Dragon Nest," the ancient name for the capital city, and is a nod to Drania’s deep connection to draconic heritage—particularly the wyverns that once soared over its misty highlands and still serve as steeds in its elite knightly orders.
Unlike hereditary monarchs in other realms, the title of Wyvern Lord is not passed down through bloodline, but is earned through prestige, loyalty, and the backing of the majority of Elector Princes. In theory, any Elector could be chosen, though in practice only the most politically savvy or militarily accomplished candidates stand a chance. Once elected, the Wyvern Lord rules for life, unless abdication or deposition occurs—both rare and controversial acts that risk destabilizing the fragile balance of power in the realm.
The authority of the Wyvern Lord is considerable but not absolute. While they preside over the Elector Assembly and can introduce or veto legislation, they must maintain a careful web of allegiances to avoid alienating powerful regions or noble houses. The role is as much a balancing act as it is a throne—a throne carved of ancient stone and draconic symbolism, housed in the Great Roost - Seat of the Wyvern Lord at the heart of Dragness. Ceremonial duties are frequent, but so are wartime responsibilities; the Wyvern Lord is expected to lead Drania's armies in defense of the realm, or at least appoint a trusted general to do so in their stead.
Despite its burdens, the title remains one of immense prestige and legacy. Past Wyvern Lords are remembered for uniting Drania in times of war, brokering peace among squabbling princes, or leading great reforms that shaped the future of the peninsula. But for every revered ruler, there is also a tale of ambition undone or power corrupted—reminders that the throne of wyverns is not simply a seat of power, but a crucible of character.
