Kachi-kachi
Physical Description
Kachi-kachis are small bird-like animals native to the Dividing Archipelago. Their eyes and beaks are dark brown, while their bodies are olive-brown with a light yellow underside. Kachi-kachi tails end with vivid feathers and two long tail streamers.Male kachi-kachis possess striking black feathers around their beaks. In comparison, females have lighter brown colouration. Both sexes display horn-like protrusions on their heads.
Vocalisation
Kachi-kachis are very social and vocal creatures. They are named after the distinct vocalisations - a harsh, ascending call and a raspy chatter.Diet and mutualism with phas’qhunjs
Kachi-kachis mainly eat fruits, grains, insects and small animals. They don’t refuse food scraps left from other animals or people.Their symbiosis with phas’qhunjs is well-known throughout the Divider. Kachi-kachis hop on the large beasts and clean them from parasites. In return, phas’qhunjs allow kachi-kachis to lay eggs close to their nests. Phas’qhunjs are notoriously aggressive, scaring off potential predators and egg thieves.
Breeding
Kachi-kachis are monogamous and pair for life. Yet they often engage in extra-pair copulation and mate outside their partner. They make nests from branches, dried grass and phas’qhunj feathers. The female lays three to four eggs and the pair incubates them for three weeks. The chicks are relatively mature and mobile from the moment of hatching.
Aw, so cute. I love their name and how they're visually similar to phas'qunjs; helps convey how these two animals are related to— Wait. No, I forgot there's no evolution on Ayonerra.
Maya based kachi-kachis and phas'qhunjs on creatures from her original planet, where animals developed with evolution. So there, the two species were related. And this relation shows on Ayonerran versions as well.
