Olwen of the Four Flowers

Olwen is the subject of a Leante myth that may or may not have historical founding. In most versions, she is a princess from Clan Furan, an extinct noble family.   In the most ancient myths, Olwen is a half-Deinain princess who causes flowers to blossom wherever she steps. She brings flowers, fruit, and foison to the Ithir Plains, draws the River Realta out of the earth and leads it east to kiss the Sea. In other versions of the myth, she is chased by Nabas the Wolf of Night, who causes her to leap from the Spada to Miller's Range to Bianna Daern before fleeing down the Realta and vanishing into the Sea. In a third, much more bizarre version, she and a loving knight actually slay the Wolf of Night and put an end to darkness and want; other versions of this same myth have her helping Laoch Torin to slay the Dragon Itherion, whose potent blood causes flowers to bloom all over the fields.   In the Mother's Myth, Olwen is an ancient queen who bears four daughters, each more beautiful than the last. Their beauties draw the attention of four Hadrashi princes. The princes make war against Olwen's people in hopes of seizing the daughters, and the mortals are unable to withstand the attack. Olwen calls upon the Deinain to protect her daughters, and Faereann the Queen of Light transforms them into beautiful flowers: Rosemary, Buttercup, Sea Aster, and Cowslip. In some myths, these flowers are then likened to Revellia, Bastis, Ethel, and Urudun, respectively.   In the Maiden's Myth, Olwen is the princess of a great clan who falls in love with a knight of much lower birth. Through feats of valor and wit (and with the aid of Olwen herself), the knight proves himself worthy and is offered Olwen's hand, but before their wedding her father withdraws his consent and offers Olwen to another, a cruel but highborn lord. The worthy knight makes war against the wicked lord and seizes Olwen, and they are married in the woods. In time, Olwen's father forgives them and makes the worthy knight his heir. In some versions, the knight seizes the wicked lord's seat. In still others, he makes war against Olwen's father and obliterates her clan. This is the version told by Clan Moyra, who claim that Clan Furan was destroyed so their ancestor (called simply the Heir or the Moyra) could be with the woman who loved him. In other versions of this myth, the Moyra is a treacherous servant who steals Olwen away and betrays her father unto death.
