Carramar Uirlis

Sir Carramar Fuinnon

Chief of Ships under Dorreon the Magnificent and Garland IV.   Sir Carramar was placed on the King's counsel specifically to appease those who felt too many Westerners were in positions of power. The nephew and heir to Lord Andurnar Uirlis at the time, Sir Carramar would never inherit the chiefdom of Clan Uirlis, as Lord Andurnar would remarry and father three sons, two of which survived to adulthood.   Sir Carramar is largely remembered as an inexperienced boy who was constantly overridden or outmaneuvered by the Mox Master Golbran Oishlog during the Stock Wars, who famously said Sir Carramar "might more truly bear a clown and ass for his sigil than a knight and horse." In truth, Sir Carramar would learn and mature greatly during his tenure, and some consider him a serious force in the political conflicts leading up to the Four Crowns.   There was no question, however, that Sir Carramar was an odd choice for Chief of Ships. The Uirlis ruled the Spada, a beautiful and bountiful stretch of land that commanded much of the eastern coasts, yet they held few ships and no piers, their coastlands being too shallow for sailing. Sir Carramar had fought in two sea battles during the Stock Wars, and had even briefly taken over captaincy of the Poisoned Spear when her captain, first, and second mate all died of illness within a day. Yet the Uirlis were not seasoned sailors. Chief of Ships was a title more often given to the lords of either Dubraigh or Aerwoth. Yet the Padwells of Aerwoth were still fairly new to their power, having taken over Castle Magg during the fall of Clan Ainros, and King Dorreon supposedly feared this might look like a move to consolidate power for those that had unseated the previous royal line. Conversely, the clans of Dubraigh were all Siiari, and would only exacerbate the fear that Westerners were supposedly taking over the capital. The Uirlis, meanwhile, boasted a purely eastern, almost northern pedigree, and Sir Carramar was seen as a man easily controlled.   Genev the Terrible speculates that Sir Carramar's death is suspicious, noting that he was replaced by Lord Thaddeus Padwell, a man who loudly considered himself more qualified for the position. Yet it must be concluded that Sir Carramar was in his fiftieth year, Lord Thaddeus was an obvious choice for replacement, and few would consider his boasting unexpected, or even incorrect.
