April Dawn

April Dawn (a.k.a. Queen Metallian)

I am April the Dawnchaser, the last daughter of the late Taina the Chaotic. Only a year after Cora, I was born and raised. Thankfully he didn't cast a long shadow, but, his departure cause a definite stir among Makaritau. While the shaman, whom he had wooed, was steadfast in remaining on-world, folks like Samurra sought to prance off to found a more modernized village. We, it seems, would follow her, but surpassed her in short order as we left the planet surface.
Takuvia. The thick, congested heart of Federation space. My- no, our- hell for the next years. Taina's age left her susceptible to the world's poor air quality, and because we didn't have any money to our names, we had to lay claim to a small patch of the alleyway. Her worsening condition left her unable to nab a job, and so I shouldered the weight. I remember the job all too well, a waitress at some corner. It wasn't glorious, and I'd been pestered by a handful of less than scrupulous patrons, but, the income almost made up for it. Helping my mother, though, that's truly what kept me going.
Years on, and she wasn't getting better. One night, I had been awoken to raucous coughs, and sleepily pushed myself to a sitting position, and leaned over her tightly bundled form. Just in front of the opening she breathed out of, a spatter of blood. Worry immediately took me, and I carefully pulled her closer. Her breaths were shallow, ragged. I knew she didn't have long, and just held her. I don't know why, perhaps just scrambling to remind her of nicer times, but I just started singing to her the lullaby that I was raised on. "ti hapuwirr whath murr inga whirr." She reached up, brushed tears that I didn't even realize were forming, smiled one last time, and closed her eyes. It was inevitable. I knew this. But that still crushed me.
Next morning, I awoke clutching her still, cold self close. Realistically, I didn't have the strength to do any digging, but, after a quick, solemn purchase, I carried her out of city limits and set to work. I was almost an hour late to work, and was so heavily distracted. My manager pulled me aside, and I choked it out between sobs. I was given the rest of the day off. On my way out, though, I guess I was humming some tune... or, singing quietly. For the second time that day, I was pulled aside. His touch was incredibly warm. Mimru Elra, he introduced himself. The Metallians were in need of a backup vocalist after a stage accident.
One audition later, I was aboard, and during the first concert, I quickly cemented my position. With a career secured, I politely backed out as a waitress, and thanked them for all they had done for me. Little did I realize, though, just how influential I would soon become. My shattered confidence was reforged in camaraderie, quenched and tempered in solidarity. I would never bump the lead singer off, I never wanted to, but over the next few years, I had organized our most dedicated fans into a street gang.
Nowadays, they refer to me as Queen Metallian, from the backseat of the band, I direct the fervor of our fans. Unlike Kymag and his hooligans, though, I will not permit them to be so base. They are to help the neighborhoods, to strengthen our connections with the people rather than pull them under our sway forcibly through terror. We are a brotherhood. A family.
— April Dawn
The rampant, provocative leader of the studded leather-clad gang known as the Metallians, named after the band she's the backup singer for. Her striped face is concealed behind white and black fur-paint, and some say she's capable of breathing fire.
