Journeyman
A journeyman is the second rank above an Apprentice in the ranks of a guild. After they graduate from their apprenticeship, they may choose a new Master to work for or may leave on their journey to gain the experience they need to gain their own Masters rank.
As a journeyman, they were a day worker and either worked for themselves or for any master that would take them. They had to report to the local guild to tell them that they were working there and pay their dues while there. Depending on the guild, a journeyman could also take on their own apprentice to train.
Journey meant the distance that one could travel in a day. Some guilds only allowed them to travel this distance until they became a master. After attaining this rank, they were given papers that proved their skill, the master and guild they trained under. Many traveled long distances, to learn from various masters.
These journeys could last many years before they deemed themselves ready to "graduate", afterward they need to create their own masterpiece and be judged by a panel of masters. The guild that they are judged in doesn't need to be the guild that they were trained in.
