Batrar

Batrar is a village located at the northern end of the Ardenka basin in the region of Sabarva. It is surrounded by many hamlets dotting the basin. The nearest town is Gerend which sits at the only entrance to the basin in the southwest.

Demographics

This village consists entirely of native Kíans. Most are poor farmers who grow their crops as their main means of survival.

Government

Batrar is mostly self governing as it is in the controled region of Sabarva. In the past it was governed by the Lord of Ardenka who was responsible for local laws and justice.   Now it is controlled by Tasa Tae' Raugfathdaer's soldiers who will hand out "justice" as they see fit, often wrongly imprisoning or punishing innocents.

Defences

The village has no defences other than the natural ones to the north provided by the mountains and dense forest.

Industry & Trade

The majority of the inhabitants are farmers. Most trade happens within the village but farmers often sell some of their produce in Gerend and bring extra money into the local economy. Rarely, travelers from Gerend will come and visit Batrar. They export cloth and some metalwork to Gerend as well but not a significant amount. There is a small mining group of roughly thirty who will occasionally mine rocks for construction but only when needed. Only very rarely will they mine for ores.

Infrastructure

The roads are very basic with most being simple dirt tracks. Water is taken from several wells in the area as well as the river. Sewage is often dumped in the river outside of the village. There is one mill on the river but it is very small and often can't cope with the amount of grain needed to feed the village.

Assets

The village has two shoemakers, a tailors, a barber, a tavern, a stone mason, a weaver, a bakery and an out of use carpentry. The rest is made up of farmland.

Guilds and Factions

The two main factions acting in the village are the local villagers who want to live their lives in peace and the invading soldiers who see the village and its people as weak and expendible, only useful for cruel entertainment. This has led to many fights occuring between the two sides.

History

Batrar started when a small group of farmers was bet a large sum of money that they wouldn't be able to start a village in the then unexplored north of the basin. The farmers accepted and took their families north. They started in the spring by building shelter and sewing the fields. The year was excellent for growing and the soil was fertile. When they returned a year later, the citizens of Gerend had been sure they had died. They handed over the money and hearing of the farmers' success, many joined them on the journey back.   Batrar has only grown since, being highly popular with young men eager to prove themselves to their families. Batrar has earnt the reputation of being one of the most profitable areas for farming, attracting more and more people over the years.   For the past thirteen years, a fire dragon has come to protect the village when it's been attacked. The dragon has been nicknamed " The Dragon of Ardenka ", despite only ever being seen in and around Batrar. No one knows why it protects the village but some speculate that a dragon rider is hiding there.

Architecture

The buildings are basic and wooden with wattle and daub walls. They are built for functionality and are generally quite small with only two or three rooms. Few have an upper floor.

Geography

Batrar sits at the foot of the mountains surrounding Ardenka basin. The ground in front of it facing south is flat plains. The village is built where the ground starts to slope upwards to maximise easy farmland. The plains are irrigated by a river that runs to the east of the village and makes it's way down to Gerend where it leaves the basin.

Natural Resources

Villagers get wood from the surrounding forest, coal and ore from small mines, grain and vegetables from the farms and livestock, including sheep, cattle, chickens and pigs.
