Adele (Ah-dell-(eh))

Adele (a.k.a. The Dagger of Ys)

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Adele is a Marie-Morgane, temporally locked in a point of physical youth and vitality. Even among the Daughters of Ys, however, she maintains a physical training regimen to keep her reflexes and strength up, operating as a Merrow for the Sunken City.

Body Features

Adele is a Caucasian woman, seemingly in her early 20s, with light blonde hair. Her tail is covered in dark purple scales, ending with a forked fin with a fuscia hue. Similarly coloured webbing stretches between her fingers and ear-fins.

Identifying Characteristics

Adele has a scallop-shell tattoo on her wrist, showing her former allegiance to the Coquillard.

Special abilities

Adele is gifted in the manipulation of glamour, a talent which has increased upon gaining the magik of a Marie-Morgane. She is a talented caster, largely self-trained in the use of Druidecht, but lacks the discipline for more complex Huderezh .   Adele is one of the few Marie-Morgane who has mastered the art of shapeshifting, appearing as a human and capable of traversing across land in a limited capacity. This makes her an ideal member of the Merrow, capable of infiltrating Bediz ports and ships.   Adele has the distinction of being the fastest individual to master the Oceansong, using it to save Fleur shortly after her own transformation, singing in a duet with Ghyslaine.

Apparel & Accessories

Adele, when she wears clothing, typically wears a tight leather sleeveless gambeson, dyed to a maroon shade, over a mauve undershirt, with puffy white sleeves. Adele is fond of kerchiefs, and typically wears either a green or dark red headband that pushes her hair up.   Adele wears a pierced golden coin from Pharos as a necklace.

Specialized Equipment

Adele fights with a pair of daggers.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Adele was born to a poor peasant family in the slums of Gwitreg, but soon became an orphan when her parents died of the Shivers. Her poverty, and the stigma of the disease, ensured that the young girl would be cast out into the streets. Rather than perish, however, Adele excelled as a pickpocket, discovering she was Boermerzh, with a natural affinity to wielding glamour. Her talents were quickly discovered by The Coquillard. They quickly claimed her, plucking her from a press-gang bound for Aleth. Adele believes that this "heroism" was a feint, and the press-gang was working with the thieves, the entire ordeal merely a ploy to instill a sense of social obligation and perpetual financial debt to secure her services.   Adele excelled as a thief and a grifter, eventually becoming the friend and guardian of Fleur, a young pickpocket "acquired" by the guild. Their lucrative partnership bloomed into a real friendship, pushing both to take on more ambitious tasks and keep each other out of harms way. While not an ideal life for either, they made it work for them. Until Fleur mistakenly robbed the wrong mark, stealing a golden torque from what turned out to be a powerful Sidhe Similherez, Fleur was tasked to take on a dangerous job, stealing from the sunken city of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves.   Despite the task being considered an impossible death sentence, Adele did not hesitate to join her friend and the two set off for the sunken city, encountering the Groac'h of Enez-Lok, the Marie-Morgane Similherez Ghysaine. Ghyslaine worked out their true purpose, but agreed to help them anyway. The task brought the pair through the crumbling city, as Ghyslaine hovered nearby for "chance" encounters to guide them along the way. Finally, they entered the crumbling seawalls, a massive labyrinth of channels and tunnels ringing the city. A collapse threatened to kill them both, but Adele made a choice, accepting The Oceansong and becoming a Marie-Morgane. Adele and Ghyslaine turned their attention to Fleur, transforming the thief as well, saving her life.   Now both mermaids, the pair were eventually welcomed into the city, joining together in a Springtide ceremony and becoming full members of Ys-Beneath-the-Waves.

Sexuality

Both before and after joining the Daughters of Ys, Adele was exclusively attracted to other women, but has become more open about her preferences since becoming Marie-Morgane. She entered into a formal relationship with her longtime friend Fleur, following up their Springtide ceremony with a smaller marriage ceremony in the Lethan tradition. The pair are among the more monamourous of the Marie-Morgane, in a committed relationship with a single partner, although the pair maintain a close relationship with Ghyslaine, leading to rumours of a more complex romantic relationship than outward appearances suggest.

Employment

Fleur is one of the Merrow, the red-capped spies and assassins of Ys, investigating and counteracting threats from the surface against the Beacon City. She typically works in tandem with Fleur, and is active all along the coast of the Pleg-mor Gwaskogn.

Morality & Philosophy

Adele is primarily a pragmatist, but is fiercely loyal to her friends and her new home, taking part in dangerous missions to protect them both. She is direct and proactive, and will take steps to remove Fleur from danger when possible.

Taboos

Adele shares the Ere-Hud of the Marie-Morgane, and is bound by their constraints and boons.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Adele's primary motivation is the protection of Fleur, an attitude that has expanded, to a lesser degree to all of her Marie-Morgane sisters. As she becomes more secure and the traumas of the past begin to soften, her desire for selfish survivalism has given way to a commnunal pride for Ys.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Adele is a master grifter, capable of reading others and manipulating situations to her advantage. Adept at the use of glamour, she relies on it heavily to assist in her grifts.   A lifetime of growing up on the streets of Gwitreg have left Adele with a difficulty to trust and open up, and Fleur's more altruistic nature sometimes throws her for a loop.

Likes & Dislikes

Adele has an especially deep distrust of the Faith, and by extension, organized religions in general. She frequently is at odds with Perfect Ailinor, who heads the Faithful of Ys.

Vices & Personality flaws

Adele is over-reliant on glamour, and uses it commonly. This has fed into a certain level of vanity as she fusses over small details in her appearance, a trait which has worsened since gaining access to the stronger Arkane of the Marie-Morgane.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Adele's closest companion is the thief Fleur, her childhood friend turned lover. Growing up together in the slums of Gwitreg, Adele took the younger girl under her wing and the pair helped each other survive. When Fleur was forced into a dangerous job against Ys, Adele joined her. Both were turned into Marie-Morgane. The change freed the pair from their obligations to the gang, and from their fears from society. The two embraced their new lives wholeheartedly, joining together in Springtide.   Adele is also close to the eccentric Marie-Morgane mage Ghysaine. Ghyslaine was the first Marie-Morgane met by Fleur and Adele in the Glenan Isles and she assisted them in gaining access to Ys-Beneath-the-Waves and performing the Oceansong that would save their lives. The trio remain close and Ghyslaine was given special permission to oversee the pair's Springtide ceremony.

Family Ties

Adele's parents were both killed during an outbreak of the Shivers, leaving her an orphan.

Religious Views

Frequently targeted as a Boermerzh by Slaver's and the Order of Albi, Adele had little love for the Faith and is areligious.

Social Aptitude

Adele is a confident grifter and a smooth talker, often taking on the role of face as Fleur operates behind the scenes. She exudes a self-assured attitude, seeming to be in control of situations, even in moments where she is secretly panicking. She guards her personal feelings well, except around Fleur, and has difficulty trusting others.   A natural at the manipulation of glamour, she has a somewhat high opinion of herself, tempered by the relentless persecution and exploitation in her childhood.
