The Nation of Sul'ban

Written by GMJaraxus-527

The established homeland of the Genasi people on the continent of Herrocke. It's somewhat chaotic infrastructure reflects it's rough history, initially being settled by Genasi refugees from around the world. The peninsular country rests on the north-western side of the continent, with a large and treacherous mountain range at it's heart. The land is truly a near paradise where the residents live in harmony with their neighbors, both Genasi and foreign, worshiping the elements and the gods who control them. It is also the place where the legendary Pathfinders that changed the course of world history first met to adventure with one another.

Structure

The main leader of the nation bears the title of Gea'sun. The Gea'sun surrounds themselves with trusted advisers and at least one monk trained at the Great Temple, Sul'ran. These individuals make up the Gea'sun's "Family". Members of the Family are tasked with advising the Gea'sun and making decisions or taking action in their respective localized parts of the country. The Gea'sun is concerned with decision making and action regarding the nation as a whole, including foreign affairs.

Public Agenda

The Gea'sun and his advisers are concerned with maintaining peace in their own country and with neighboring countries. They strive to allocate resources and attention fairly across the nation, and have little to do with any affairs beyond Sul'ban's borders. They are also beholden to the monk or monks that are members of the Family, as they are charged with guiding all decisions based on the will of the gods.

Assets

The mountains in the heart of Sul'ban are rich in resources, mainly rare earth metals. These are extracted and exchanged in trade for imported goods. The Genasi farms of Sul'ban use unique agricultural techniques that result in very rich foods, loaded with nutrients, which are valuable to neighboring lands close enough to receive them still fresh. Sul'ban does not have much of an army to speak of, but the Elemental Guard are trained Genasi soldiers who patrol across the nation. There are a couple of outposts near the capital where some troops are garrisoned.

History

Sul’ban was mostly unexplored territory when the first Genasi to settle there arrived. These original settlers had fled from other continents, having been driven out by members of other races. They stuck close to the shore and kept a very low profile. As time went on, more and more Genasi came to the region in search of a home of their own. They spread further along the coast and inland toward the Sul’ranian mountains. Around this time is when the Firbolgs of Liu Zhou and the Elves of Faerisia began exploring into the region that had become a union of refugee camps for the Genasi. Having been neighbors for some time with each other and several different races, the Firbolgs and Elves were welcoming to the Genasi, seeing the desperate situation of the oppressed people. The Firbolgs and Elves offered to allow the Genasi to live in peace in the Sul'ban region in exchange for utilizing the Genasi’s natural ability to manipulate the elements. The Genasi agreed, and many moved southwest to be closer to the border of Liu Zhou and Faerisia. Shortly after this, the Genasi encountered the Dwarves of Norlocke, with whom they established a similar pact to the one they made with the Firbolgs and Elves. The Genasi formed a simple society for themselves in the region, creating a basic governing system to allow them to re-establish their culture. Genasi from around the world continued to arrive on Sul’ban’s shores to begin new lives in a place they can call home, with much of the population concentrated in the southwest for easy travel to the neighboring nations for work and trade. As time went on, the Genasi were increasingly being taken advantage of by their neighbors, often being influenced to remain to work in the foreign lands more than they worked in their new homeland. Many Genasi had been subject to lives of servitude in the past, so this gradual trend went unnoticed by most of the population. However, there was one male Genasi who did notice, and he did not like what was happening. Working with the regional leaders of Sul'ban, this man, named Reteal Dunsan, created a new pact to which the leaders of their neighboring countries agreed, which promised support in critical areas when called for and a treaty declaring the people of Sul'ban as allies rather than cheaply hired labor. Dunsan was so effective in peacefully negotiating among his own people and with the foreigners that he quickly became the main organizer of creating Sul'ban's independent government. He trained his children to become leaders, and began the Dunsan dynasty that has made the Genasi nation what it is today; a strong country of integrated cultures, modern religion, and loyalty of the Genasi people to each other and their allies.     With the original settlers of Sul'ban coming from so many different places with different ideologies and religions, integration and unity were difficult to achieve in the beginning. During the second era of the Dunsan dynasty, the Genasi began to approach each other from their respective like-cultured camps and try to understand the values and beliefs of those from other places and backgrounds. It was a time of unease as ideological differences became clear very quickly, and conflicts began to arise. A Genasi monk, follower of Gezui the Great Teacher, became a major influence for peacefully communicating to understand. Commonalities were found among the differences between the many beliefs and values the Genasi tribes had brought, and the people clung to these as a starting point. Over time, the Genasi realized a universal understanding for their people; the now widely accepted modern religion based on many different gods each with their own set of core beliefs, values, and teachings. Being a follower of one, some, all, or none of the gods are each accepted viewpoints, since the commonalities between each faith have been established as truth, with the differences having been debated, studied, and reconciled. Along with religious unity came cultural integration. As the Genasi from around the world interacted with one another more frequently, they all became aware of each other's lifestyles and traditions from their backgrounds. Today, the Genasi culture is a unique kind of it's own, comprising of aspects of many different cultures being blended. Though in certain areas of Sul'ban, one can still find more prominent remnants of one particular culture over the others.
