The Kal'Un Mountains
The mountain range at the heart of the nation of Sul'ban, home of the Great Temple Sul'ran and many other mysterious creatures and locales. Filled with natural beauty and hidden terror, it is said that the air above and the stone below the towering, jagged peaks are permeated with a strange, magical energy. No one person has been able to discover and map out the whole range, and those who try do not return. While certain areas of the range are familiar to the natives, there are other areas completely untouched by civilized people. Woe to those who stray too far from the established mountain routes...
Geography
The peaks of Kal'Un are among the tallest in Allocke, bearing very treacherous terrain save for the relatively scarce pathways that meander through the gorges and the valleys. Average altitudes in the midst of the range reach up to thousands of feet above sea level. The tallest summits are laden with soft, light snow, and the lower peaks as well as the valleys are rich with plant and animal life. The source of the Mana River is hidden somewhere in the range, but no one has come close to locating it.
Fauna & Flora
Most living things in the Kal'Un Range reside in the lower few thousand foot altitudes. One can find hardy mountain oaks and pines near the base, becoming rarer higher up. Rough high altitude grasses grow far into the range, fading to stone midway to the summits. The sloping faces of the mountains are blanketed with this grass and many diverse plants. The fields are rich with flowers and herbs of many different kinds, each with their own properties, whether they be helpful or harmful. Insects and birds thrive in these areas, including bees, dragonflies, spiders, songbirds, birds of prey, and the rare, exotically colorful Juul'nian bird. Other animals live in the range as well, from rodents and rabbits to rams and wolves. There is evidence of larger beasts taking residence in the higher altitudes, and rumors have been circulating of cockatrice or even drakes, though none of these stories have been confirmed.
Natural Resources
The Kal'Un Mountains are renowned for their abundance in resources of the most valuable kind. Deposits of coal, iron, silver, gold, and occasionally even mythril populate the stone beneath the mountains' surface. Waterfalls along the Mana River serve as excellent gathering points for arcane power that can be placed into proper containers. There are a couple spots where crude oil is harvested from carefully excavated caverns. Precious gems can also be found in similar caverns where the conditions are present to grow crystal. The full extent of the cavern network underground has not yet been realized, and prospectors dream of finding the deepest depths to mine from. If they could just get down there...
