Morkae

Written by GMJaraxus-527

The largest city in the Genasi homeland, second only to the trade capital of Jala'ran, Morkae serves as the capital of Sul'ban, home of the Manor of the Gea'sun, and showcase of the country's subtle, yet impressive wealth and power. Many different tradesmen and guilds have established their home and presence in the metropolis. If one were looking to get their big break or find a piece of premium property in Sul'ban, this is the place to do it.

Demographics

Mainly Genasi live here, but populations of the other major races are present and interspersed across the city. The wealthy live close to the Gea'sun's Manor at the split in the Agu'ar River. The market districts surround this area on each bank of the river and the branches. Residential areas encircle that section, and beyond that on the northeast side of the river branches, wide swaths of farmland.

Government

The Governor and Judge of Morkae is chosen through the process of the Gea'sun selecting a handful of candidates and the people of the city voting for their favorite. It is possible for no candidate to get enough votes to be chosen, where the Gea'sun must seek out additional or replacement candidates to vote for. The Governor and Judge handles all legal matters within the city of Morkae. He nominates a Peacekeeper to head the law enforcement department, who manages the city guard and the military force present in the area. It is illegal to use unauthorized magic in the wealthy district and the Gea'sun's Manor.

Defences

On either side of the main roads leading into the city is a small guard's tower, each staffed with five city guards. Patrols of two guards traverse the streets, and at night the alleys, and patrols are also stationed in major intersections of the wealthy district and at the gates to the Gea'sun's Manor. Hidden ballistae are stationed on the roofs of one building in each of the three sectors of the city. There is a military garrison in the city, east of the wealthy district, containing about 30 soldiers at a time during periods of peace. The garrison holds two catapults and three mobile ballistae.

Industry & Trade

Morkae acts as a hub for most of the land based trade flowing into and out of Sul'ban. The city makes its share through taxes on sales and the wealthy residents. Caravans pay tolls to pass across the bridges within the cities, and taxes pull from transactions made with the ferry services as well.

Infrastructure

Slated stone roads characterize the pathways and alleys throughout Morkae, with major, wide roads inside the row of buildings along each of the shores. A bridge links each of the three sectors of the city over each of the branches of the river, of well constructed cobblestone with slate stone paths. There are small boats in the rivers that will ferry passengers around the city along the branches of the river, and a couple larger ferry's that can ship passengers and light cargo out of the city along the branches.

Guilds and Factions

The Merchants, the Mercenaries, and at times even the Pathfinders compete with each other to bring financial prosperity into the city through exotic items to sell attracting attention from the wealthy residents and travelling collectors. The Artisans participate in this competition as well through the creation of extremely unique Genasi cultural artifacts. Money talks in Morkae, and usually the people with more of it have more political influence. The Church, the Artisans, and the Merchants all tend to lean towards traditional style, Sul'ban and Genasi supporting policies. The Pathfinders and Mercenaries prefer more progressive policies with a big picture focus on Sul'ban's place on the world stage of Allocke.

History

What began as an encampment that served as a meeting place for the early Genasi culture to conduct foreign relations is now the booming metropolis of Morkae, a city bustling with trade, religion, and travel. It's convenient location at the split in the Agu'ar River led to it's gradual growth over time from encampment, to settlement, to city. Today it is the largest and most populated area in all of Sul'ban.

Architecture

Almost all of the structures within the city are formed out of colored stone of various types. Each building incorporates different elemental aspects into it's design; some buildings may have fountains or braziers, while others have elaborate stonework or fluting columns and arches that control the flow of the air around it. The bridges in the city arch over the river and its branches, supported only by the land on either side that they connect to. Straight trusses underneath the bridges provide strength and support.
