Jala'ran

Written by GMJaraxus-527

Resting on the southern coast of Sul'ban, the walled metropolis serves as the capital of the shipping industry for the country. Though sea trade is the main focus of the settlement, several merchants and guilds have made a home in Jala'ran. Just as much as healthy, prosperous trade takes place though, it is not a stranger to darker dealings occurring in the shadows. Diverse characters from all across Allocke travel to Jala'ran to utilize it's services, or potentially take advantage of them. Pirates need be wary in the area however, as the Genasi have a sizable protective navy stationed at the city.

Demographics

All races, classes, and personas can be found in Jala'ran at any given time. For those who live here, everyone is relatively equal in financial status, even though they have varied lifestyles. Everyone from fishermen to entertainers can find great success with enough heart and effort. The guilds, government buildings, and higher class residents of Jala'ran are positioned around and inland of the harbor. The shipyard stretches from the shore all the way to the wall farther inland. The shops and other residents live inland beyond the white collar district and along the side of the shipyard, encircled by the wall. The naval base is located on the opposite side of the shipyard, surrounded by the rest of the wall. Some small farming, logging, and fishing communities are scattered on the outskirts of the city, outside the wall.

Government

Legal matters in Jala'ran are handled by a Council of Judges, consisting of residents and some guild leaders. The Council members are nominated by popular vote among the other residents.

Defences

A 15' wall, thick enough to support two people crossing along the top, surrounds the major areas of Jala'ran. Each corner along the wall features a small guard tower where archers are posted, and patrols of guards walk along the walls constantly. Patrols of guards traverse the streets of Jala'ran as well, evenly distributed across the city. There is a naval base of operations to the northern side of the shipyard, where military ships and personnel are stationed out of. There are three anti-air cannons positioned atop of buildings in the city as well.

Industry & Trade

A large portion of the city's income is generated from the ship-building yards. Catching and sale of fish and other aquatic resources across Sul'ban provides another rich venue for income, as well as trade for foreign materials and goods.

Infrastructure

A large harbor rests along the coastline on the southern half, and a major shipyard occupies the space along the coastline on the northern half. A minor defensive wall surrounds the majority of the city. Trolleys traverse back and forth along several of the major roads through Jala'ran.

Guilds and Factions

The factions within Jala'ran aren't as politically active as those in Morkae, however the guilds align themselves along with the ideals and preferences of their fellows in Morkae. The balance of influence is constantly shifting back and forth between the two major parties in Jala'ran, however the naval presence of the Genasi military in the area has been affecting the politics by beginning to issue orders for the shipyards to start building warships. The Council members have lately begun to be swayed towards the idea of Sul'ban becoming more of an active player on the world stage of Allocke.

History

Jala'ran was established by two cargo ships full of refugee Genasi landing in the perfectly conditioned harbor and setting up camp. The peninsular area made an excellent home for the sea-reliant community to spring up and grow. Traders would come by as time went on, and some travelers even chose to stay. The town was already thriving by the time the union of Sul'ban was formed. Once the land connections were made with the other cities of the country, growth in Jala'ran exploded. Shortly after the climax of it's growth, the expansion plateaued, as incoming travelers became interested in exploring deeper into Sul'ban rather than just settling in Jala'ran. The city is most certainly still growing though, and the small communities outside of its built up wall are becoming more populated each year.

Architecture

The architecture of the structures within Jala'ran are all adorned with the Genasi touch of incorporating elemental aspects into their design, with a trend of emphasizing the fact that it is a sea port. Water references and elements are predominant throughout the area, and cool, ocean colors are used extensively.
