Colossus War
The Colossus War was the great conflict which ripped apart the first order of Existence. Aiaos was designed as a perfect, harmonious system, able to correct for any internal upset. It was not, however, equipped to repel an external influence.
The The Primeval Gods had departed the sphere of created Existence, leaving the World in the hands of the Old Gods, the Titans and the Primordial Dragons. That World was perfectly balanced, a flawless mechanism intended to last forever in the care of its custodians, and it would have done so had it not been acted on by outside forces.
The Primordial Dragons and the Old Gods should, perhaps, have been more alert, but they were distracted by the machinations of their own children - the Titans and the Elder Wyrms - and knew nothing until it was too late. The Colossi came from the sky, legends say, on wings of broken flame, and tore The Firmament as they fell.
Godlike in their power and utterly alien to the world they now trod, the mere presence of these creatures within the Voidskin threatened to tear all of creation apart. It is not known what their intention was, whether they were conquerors or fugitives or relicts from another world, but the mere fact of them was inimical to the reality of Aiaos. Only the tireless efforts of the Gods and the Primordials, and the divine radiance of the Twins, kept the destruction in check. This, a sort of natural disaster with a level of intent, would have been bad enough, but soon enough the original Colossi, three in number, were joined by more. After that, the Outerfolk came, mortal in span, but just as alien as the gods they followed and obeyed.
In response, the powers of Aiaos brought forth the first Mortal Lineages to be their instruments - the mortal Dragons, Eladrin, Featherfolk and Dragonborn - to battle the outerfolk. In order to prevent confusion and protect the sanctity of Creation itself, the first mortal dragons brought with them a gift of the Primordials: Time. By constraining events to a specific order, cause following effect, they prevented the Colossi taking root in the Primeval creation, but at the cost of binding all mortals to a finite span.
For the Old Gods, it was all too late. Without its state of perfection, the world held no welcome for them, and they were forced to retreat to the Firmament. This was not to their enemies' advantage, however, as from there they were able to reinforce the Voidskin against further incursions.
As the war waged on, however, and the Titans and Primordials created new soldiers and servants - the Forgeborn proxies, the Featherfolk, the Dragonborn and, albeit accidentally, the Kobolds - it began to look as if there was no victory in sight, but then, almost overnight, the forces of the Colossi dried up. Why they stopped is not known for sure, but most believe that the Old Gods, or the Twins, or some other power completely sealed the Voidskin, cutting off their reinforcements.
Gradually, and at a terrible cost, the Colossi and outerfolk present upon the world were destroyed, or forced into hiding. From their halls in the Firmament, the Old Gods then moved to repair the damage caused by the War. They bolstered the influence of the Divine Twins to drive out the influence of the Colossi and repair the damage to the world; in both regards, their actions failed. The alien corruption drained down into The Abyss, but did not return to the Void, instead pooling and festering and creating dark and terrible Pits which vomited forth a new form of life: Demons, a threat that might have undermined all of Existence, had not the Abyss found its defenders in the Devils of the Infernal Host.
Meanwhile, on the dome of Aiaos, the power sent to restore harmony pooled and clotted, or else spilled uncontrollably into the World. The first effect gave rise to the multitude of Young Gods, while the second gave the accidental gift of Magic to the emergent moral races.
