Outerfolk
Outerfolk is the blanket term used for the extra-ontological creatures that followed the Colossi out of the Void. As with the Colossi, there have been very for successful attempts to communicate with the outerfolk beyond the basics of 'surrender and be our food, filth,' and no-one is sure why they follow the Colossi.
Some think that they serve the Colossi in exchange for their survival past the destruction of their own worlds, others that they were created by the Colossi. Some believe that they serve the Colossi, others that they are scavengers, attaching themselves to world-killers like pilot fish following a shark. Most likely, all are true of some outerfolk, for they are many and varied.
Those few who choose to study the outerfolk divide them into three categories: phoresic, metabiotic and domestic.
Phoresic Outerfolk appear to have no specific relationship with the Colossi, but simply travelled with them to reach Aiaos before detaching to pursue their own ends. This group includes both purely bestial creatures, large and small, and powerful, intelligent beings such as aboleths and breath drinkers.
Metabiotic Outerfolk are dedicated, for whatever reason, to making worlds - or, at least, this World - ready for the Colossi. Usually intelligent, they operate on their own terms for mutual advantage with the Colossi. This group most notably includes Mind Flayers, the various forms of spawn, slaadi and Beholders.
Domestic Outerfolk are intelligent or animalistic creatures that serve the Colossi or the metabiotic outer folk in some way, including Xvarts, cranium rats and neogi.
In addition, some categorisations include corruptive outerfolk, which 'breed' by infiltrating Aiaosian life forms. However, in addition to victims of extra ontological pathogens, this could be applied to various forms of metabiotic and domestic outerfolk who breed through infection.
A very small number of outerfolk could be - but rarely are - considered benign, having reached Aiaos by phoresis and having no ill intention towards the Mortal Lineages. Most notably, the flumphs appear to bear ill-will to none.
With the fall of the Colossi, most of the Outerfolk retreated into the depths of the Underhollows, where they strive to undermine the world, opposed by those of the deepfolk – Drow, duergar, sverfneblin and others – that they have not subjugated with their cruel powers.
High Others
The high others are the leaders of the Outerfolk, the generals of the old forces which followed the Colossi and the masters of the cults which thrive beneath the surface of the modern world. Rare and powerful, they are typically surrounded by hordes of underlings in remote and forbidding locations.- Elder Brains
- Aboleths
- Eye Tyrants
- Seers
- The Nine Deaths
Superiors
The superior races possess significant powers and a strong internal society. Groups of superiors constitute a threat to the world in and of themselves, regardless of any wider organisation or overlord.Minions
The minion races are dangerous to an individual, but an inconsequential threat to societies and the world at large without an organising intelligence to marshal their activities.- Xvarts
- Star Spawn
- Deep Spawn
- Skum and Deep Scions
The Alliance
The Alliance is an Outerfolk faction formed in the cooperation of various races under the authority of the Irreplaceable Intellect Logistician. Because of its leadership, it is a slow and methodical faction, often overly so, but it remains the largest and most coherent such organisation active in the world, sporadically allying with other groups of outerfolk and Colossus Cults as suits its purposes.
