The Botaan Pit

In the middle of the Botaan plans in the south west of Ciello lies a huge omnious pit. It measures almost a hundred meters in width, and decends far enough into the earth that it connects to the Underdark itself. 
Exactly how old the pit is is uncertain. The Imperium has no record of any such pit during their occupation of the islands. Following the fall of the Imperium records are incomplete. Pit appears to have appeared some-time in the 3rd century. According to a (unlikely) legend king Nessumontu fought and defeated a great wyrm which emerged from the pit.
Regardless of its origins the pit is a cause for concern for most Ciellans. Creatures from the underdark periodically emerge from it sometimes in great number. The most infamous such event was a Duergar invasion in 772. 
The dukes of Ciello have often promised to seal the pit. Attempts have been made with little success.
