Vahato Character in Actrein | World Anvil

Vahato

Vahato

Written by and bufiogarugi
Vahato is a Demon. However, unlike most demons, his demeanor isn't self-important and cruel. Often, he seems more contemplative and lost than anything else.
He is extraordinarily tight-lipped about his past, only occasionally letting some small details slip. Whatever his past was, it seems to have been marred with unpleasantness and sorrow, with small grains of joy and hope sprinkled throughout.
Vahato also has a mischievous streak, which is possibly a remnant of who he was in the past. Most of the time this manifests itself in minor pranks, but occasionally it manifests itself in more severe and less humorous behaviors.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Vahato is quite muscular compared to the average Actreine, though he's said that he is hardly the strongest or most muscular out of the demons. He has battle scars peppered across his body from countless fights, but most of them don't interfere with his everyday life.

Body Features

Vahato's skin is a pale orange. He has two leathery wings on his back, as well as two medium-length (about 1'5" long) off-white horns.

Facial Features

The skin around Vahato's eyes is a slightly darker version of the color of his skin. His eyes have severe bags around them, and his expression is almost always either tired or lost in thought.

Identifying Characteristics

Vahato's body has a lot of scars on them. He's explained that they're battle scars, and that even though he gained these scars while fighting on the side that he now regrets being a part of, he is still proud that he was a good enough fighter to keep himself alive despite those difficult fights.
As such, he has a few unique and identifying scars. One such scar lays across his right eye, continuing for about 2.5" above and below his eye. This scar has rendered him blind in that eye. He does not wear an eyepatch over this scarred eye.
Another identifying scar is one across the back of his left leg, from the inner side of his thigh to the outer edge of his calf.

Physical quirks

Because of the massive scar on his left leg, Vahato actually walks with a limping motion.

Apparel & Accessories

Vahato, much like other demons, wears a simple loincloth across his crotch. Beyond that, however, his familiarity with clothing or accessories is rather limited.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Vahato is somewhat tight-lipped when it comes to his past when it comes to what came before he is first introduced to the party. He's let a few things slip, though.
He used to have a boss that he looked up to, and this boss was very strict about upholding the laws of their species' culture. At first, Vahato did so unblinkingly. But suddenly he found himself violating a core principle of their culture. Not wanting to lose his well-respected position, Vahato kept it a secret.
His boss eventually found out, of course. And his boss didn't even spare a second before exiling Vahato. Just like that, Vahato had lost everything. He hasn't seen his ex-boss since.

Education

Vahato has a decent amount of skill when it comes to combat, which he has alluded to having gained from his ex-boss' teachings.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Vahato has said that he was once genuinely proud of what he'd accomplished under his ex-boss' leadership. However, he also seems to be proud of whatever it was that got him exiled.

Failures & Embarrassments

He seems to retroactively view his past as a series of failures and embarrassments, despite them being prideful accomplishments in the time. He regrets the time he spent under his ex-boss, and the things he did working under his ex-boss.

Morality & Philosophy

Vahato's morality has been questioned and uprooted by his exile. He isn't sure anymore what's right and what's wrong, or who to trust.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Vahato is uncertain about his place in the world. The one he once looked up to shunned him for going against his species' culture, but at the same time he is wary about joining forces with the ones that used to be his enemies. He just wants to know who he can actually trust.
He also seems to want to get revenge against his ex-boss, though he doesn't seem to see that as being entirely possible or likely.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Savvies

  • Intimidation
Vahato seems to almost subconsciously be skilled with intimidation. This could be because he's a demon, or it could be something to do with his ex-boss.
  • Combat
This is hardly surprising, considering that as a demon Vahato has a great amount of muscular strength.
  • Mind games
Interestingly, Vahato has shown himself to be skilled with playing mind games and psychoanalysis. He is very tight-lipped about where this skill comes from, however.

Ineptitudes

  • Social Situations
Vahato's demeanor shows that he was once in a position of power. As such, he has very little experience with being on the same social level as everybody he's talking to.
  • Self-Confidence
His exile drastically shifted his worldview. He's gone from knowing exactly who he was and what his place was in the world to someone who often isn't even certain whether he's doing the right thing or not.
  • Diplomacy
While Vahato never outright says so, it's clear that he had underlings prior to his exile. He was definitely used to both getting ordered around and pushing or ordering his underlings around. Because of this, he doesn't have a lot of experience with negotiations and civil discussions, where intimidation and psychological manipulation are ineffective at best.

Virtues & Personality perks

Vahato is clever and quick-witted. He has demonstrated a high level of intelligence, and seems to be one of the few demons who has dedicated time to actually trying to use magic with caution and precision.

Vices & Personality flaws

Vahato often finds himself lapsing back into the way he was in his past, despite his desire to move past those days. As such, he tends to overcompensate by making himself more quiet and reserved than he is used to being, in the hopes that it will keep him from going back to his old ways. It sometimes works, but sometimes his old nature shows through anyways.
He is also quite cynical, partially due to knowing how strong his ex-boss is. He's seen up close the ones the party is going against, and he knows the odds are very much against them.

Social

Contacts & Relations

Vahato has lost all communication with his ex-boss. He doesn't seem to completely mind this, however.

Family Ties

Vahato sometimes talks about having a wife. He says that he loves her, though whenever he talks about her his expression is usually a mixture of love and pain. He refuses to talk about why, though.

Religious Views

Vahato isn't entirely certain where he stands when it comes to the ideas of religion. He doesn't trust the Vel Tuturi, though he doesn't exactly say why.

Mannerisms

Vahato is clearly used to being a powerful and imposing figure. He sometimes catches himself acting large and threatening, then remembers that he isn't part of his ex-boss' side any longer.

Speech

As a demon, Vahato's speech is low-pitched, and very hoarse and gruff. Sometimes, he'll catch himself speaking with an authoritative or commanding tone, only to realize his mistake and apologize.
It's clear that he's used to swearing at underlings. When he swears, it's never just one word. It may have just been him stubbing his toe on the corner of the wall for the fifteenth time, but he will launch out a stream of unintelligible words that are presumably profanities in the language of demons.

Sounds like a very interesting Demon. What has he done since his exile?

Jul 2, 2018 19:45

Mainly wandering around from place to place, looking for a new purpose in life. And, of course, taking care of his wife. He can't show his face around his old co-workers, so he has to avoid places frequented by them.

Oooh, when I started reading your article, I thought Vahato would be a villain, but now I see he's a hero! I love the idea of flipping the script and making a character who at first glance could easily be lumped in with the bad guys into a hero.

Jul 2, 2018 19:52

He's more of an antihero, really. He started out helping someone who could be counted as a Big Bad, but had a falling out and now he's a lost lil demon wondering what to do with his life. Antiheroes are fun c:

Very thorough! Poor boy tho, lost in the world. Hope he finds his place in the world some day X3

He might, he might not. The party might accept him as a helpful ally, or they might reject him as an ex-villain.

You really show the power of the character template here and add a lot of neat details to this demon. Well done!

Thanks! I usually try to use as much of the template as I can, then use the non-template boxes (like the sidebar and footnotes) to add even more.

Great descriptions and every bit of the template you used adds to the info well! I find that sometimes I dilute my article by trying to use lots of bits of the template, but here its all used to great effect! Also, I love the bit about him swearing. For some reason, that bit about stubbing his toe was a highlight.

Thanks! And yeah, nothing like stubbing your toe and suddenly having a whole dictionary of very choice words.
