The Social Democratic Party Of Germany
The Social Democratic Party of Germany is a political party in West Germany or The German Empire.
History:
The SPD was originally founded in 1875 and grew rapidly after the lifting of the German Empire's repressive Anti-Socialist Laws passed by then chancellor Otto van Bismark. By 1891, it adopted its Marxist Erfurt Program, a more moderate gradual progresss towards Socialism, and by 1912 it became the largest party in the Reichstag.
At the start of The Great War, The Social Democratic Party of Germany became split between pro and anti-war faction's by 1917 with the founding of The Independent Social Democratic Party of Germany or The USPD in 1917 due to the SPD's pro war stance. The SPD played a leading role in the eventually German revolution and founding the Weminar Republic as Friedrich Ebert a SPD politician served as the first president of Germany from 1919 to 1920.
From 1919 to 1920 Otto Wels served as its Party Leader or Chairman and lead resistance the successful, Kapp Pustch however most resistance in the West was crush and he was later arrested. The SPD remained banned in the West, and until The SPD was able to be reformed by Hermann Müller to some extant in East Germany but that version was all but banned by 1922. After the Ceasefire in January 1922, The German Empire lifted its martial law in February of that year thanks to Wilhelm III talking Wolfgang Kapp into restoring the empire's constitution. The nation, seemly to return to the Semi-Constitutional Monarchy that once existed before 1914, a facade of democracy in practice.
On February 14, 1922 in the city of Ruhr, Otto Wels along with other SPD and USPD exile's, reestablished the party.
Under Otto, The SPD position's themselves as against the reactionism of the restored monarchy and extremism of the growing NSDAP all while defending the ideals of republicanism.
Later that year, following the March snap election, they became the second-largest party in Frankfurt's new Reichstag.
By 1923, The SPD hopes it will restore the Weimar Republic through the old imperial system but many doubt in this plan, can it work?
