Much of humanity changed little as a result of the Great Cataclysm. The rare exceptions are the Ley Line Walker, Wild Psi-Stalkers, Warlocks, and those who developed Psionics.
A large number of humans possessing a heritage in a core belief system associated with the spirit realm were also changed forever. Many of what we call Natives, First Peoples and Aborigines are among them. In the time of Rifts Earth, the term Native Americans refers to any human or mutant animal who can trace their ancestry to Earth before the coming of the rifts. But for the purposes of this article, since you the reader exist in the 21st century, the author sincerely hopes that you permit him to use the term Native American as you would understand it: To wit, someone descended directly from the peoples who inhabited the Americas prior to European colonization and who had a cultural heritage rooted in the belief in spirits of the land who existed in a Spirit World very much connected to our own.
With the release of arcane energies associated with the great cataclysm, the barriers between earth and the spirit world were all but demolished. Those humans with a bloodline traced to Native American heritage were more attuned to the Spirit World, and were able to hear the spirits calling. The more powerful spirits themselves were able to cross over and manifest on Earth. During the years directly following the Great Cataclysm, the spirits guided the humans who could, and would, listen. The spirits guided them into several distinct communities under their protection.
Whether those communities were formed along lines of division and contention amongst the spirits, or whether those communities were formed to accommodate the variances among the Native Americans and the land is still up for debate. It suffices to say that each of the current Native American communities of Rifts Earth is unique and shares its own distinct relationship with the spirit realm and the land.

Humanity was nearly eradicated from the planet during the great cataclysm. They endured a pre-industrial dark ages where they lived and survived under attacks from both aliens and natural and supernatural disasters. Eventually, through hoarded knowledge, lore and rediscovery of lost knowledge and technology, Humanity crawled from oblivion to again take command of his surroundings. Nearly three hundred years later, Humanity is again a dominant force on the planet.
