Mother's Day

United States

A national holiday within the United States the mother's day is observed by most to some extend. How this day is observed can vary widely such as simply buying some fowers to making a full day of activities with the family.   This holiday is not just observed by humans. Many supernatural communities have adopted this holiday into their own cultures.   Therian communities and nations usually celebrate in a very similar manner if they do. Communities tightly integrated with human society almost always observe this day even if it is just to blend in. This is different in several therian communities at home in the Adirondack Mountains. The matriarchal societies already give mothers a much higher standing and the importance of their care is widely recognized and honoured. This makes a special day obsolete.   Vampires are unlikely to celebrate this day as many never had children while they were alive. Nevertheless the Sisterhood of Blood decided to create an alternative celebration on the same day. Instead of their mother's vampires honour their sire on this day which is often celebrated with a blood feast.   The Dryads generally do not observe this holiday as they are born from a tree and raised by their peers.

Interview with Cassidy, the Mother of Dragons

  By Alaina Perkins

How are you today?
Relaxed and well. No plans made other than this interview. And eating brunch is always nice.   Not celebrating with anyone?
I do actually. With my daughter Vinaya. She made plans for us which is exciting. We didn't really do mother's day before.   Vinaya is your adopted daughter?
Yes. I adopted her when she was very little. She is a refugee from... well somewhere else. We don't really know much about where she comes from, but I found her as a baby and saved her life. So I thought it was fate that I would take care of her.   That is very generous of you! Why didn't you celebrate before?
I was the mother of many, many children. The last of which died almost a thousand years ago. I never really saw myself as the mother of all the humans and supernatural orphans I had under my care. It was Vinaya's idea to do something this year. I was glad she wanted to something with me. With me travelling a lot and her being busy in college we did not have much time with each other in the last few years.   Any idea what she has planned?
No idea. Very curious, but she did not even give me a hint.
Moving on. What do you think of your title Mother of Dragons?
*sighs* Not sure. It's really just a description of what I used to be. But I was told that it was popularized through a certain TV show. Game of Thrones or something. I guess it's fine. Although apparently, that character wasn't actually a dragon.   Do the dragons in the show resemble how real dragons looked?
To some extend. But we were much bigger in general. And our wings were less flexible. So we didn't really fly. More jump really high with our hindlegs and then float.   Did the dragons celebrate mother's day?
*laughs* No. We probably would have needed a father's day. It was us brood mothers who were in charge really.   You've been doing a lot of work for orphans around the world. Another reason why many see you as a mother figure. How came that to be?
That is a very long, long story. But there was a war with many children losing their parents. I don't really remember the details, but I found ways to protect them. And then some humans started helping me. By that time I already had a human form. With the centuries this became a bigger and bigger thing. Today there are orphanages in over 186 countries under my patronage.
The reason why you travel so much then?
Part of it. I make an effort to visit at least one orphanage a week, but usually choose one that is on the way of where I was going anyway. But I am not at all involved anymore in the day to day operations. I only step in if there is a big problem. I can trust the caretakers to ensure that everything goes on.   Anything else you would like to tell mothers and future mothers?
I don't think dragonic child-rearing would translate well to humans. But I guess if there was one thing then I would say that they should not be afraid to ask for help. Raising children can be tough.   Thank you for your time! I was honestly a bit surprised when you agreed to this interview. It's not something you usually do.
Yes. And it won't happen a lot if at all in the future. But I guess I liked the idea of talking about mother's day.
