Tonight Kolbrá told me a story about sone of the new constellations, the one they call the Diplomat. The diplomats story happens many times, of course. In the version she told me, there are two kingdoms at war. The diplomat is the younger brother of the king. He sees that the war will, win or lose, destroy much of the kingdom and so he begs his brother to search for a peaceful solution. The king refuses, but the diplomat reaches out to the enemy anyway, and he finds a sympathetic ear in the court of the enemy king. Together, the two work out a treaty that they think will allow both sides to survive and thrive. They bring the treaty to their respective kings, and while the idea is accepted, the diplomat loses their position in the court. In some versions they are executed for disloyalty. In every version of this story, the diplomat accepts their fate as just and yet stands by their actions.
I find these Sormelan stories confusing. What is the moral of this story? Is the diplomat right or wrong to act as they do? It seems like they did the right thing and save many lives, but it also seems like they did the wrong thing. Kolbrá says that the story has many layers of meaning and many lessons. Then she smiled and said that the one lesson she always took from the tale of the diplomat is that life is messy.
