The Hateful Matt

by Major John Jean-Jon

There was magic in this world once, but they stole it all away.

The brothers beat a hasty retreat from the Palace, returning to their new headquarters. Stepping out of the shadows, the android voiced his disapproval. He’d been busy laying the groundwork for the brothers underground spy networks.

One of the new Brothers mentioned a ‘Newer Testament’ of St. Cuthbert recently arising in town. . The android quickly drummed up the location of this fellow who had purportedly been a thorn in the Gith side. The Brothers rushed to the location of a Night market, famed for selling various goods of both good and ill-repute.

Numerous guards were rushing towards an altercation between a fellow garbed in the colours of St Cuthbert and a squad of Gith surrounding him. His wide-brimmed pilgrim hat set him apart, and made him an easy target to seek out.

“I hold in my hands a very ambitious rabbit. He would like very much to be a man. If your god had the powers you suggest, then he could surely make the Miracle this rabbit holds in his heart come true!”

An ever-growing crowd was forming, with the angrily muttering Gith at the outskirts insisting that gods don’t exist! Thus the experiment would surely fail.

The Cuthberite: Brother Francis pulled out a book attached to a chain on his belt next to his gun (A revolver), and started flipping through it.

Disdainful looks and comments came from all parties, egging on a true display of power.

The android was not especially invested in the outcome either way, delighting in either the showing up of a false god, or the assistance in rescuing of a comrade.

The rabbit allowed a mental exchange of thoughts between the priest and himself. He pictured himself as he once was.

“All who bear witness shall be blessed!” he proclaimed, scooping up the rabbit and invoking the words within. The rabbit became a man once again, though the Android suggested it was a mere illusion. Thy’lek was impressed, and considered a conversion himself.

The brothers decided to bring him to a congratulatory celebration in a nearby bar. The shady bar was full of the usual inhabitants, the priest was a bit taken aback by their choice of locale. Folks cleared a table for the brothers, who sat down with the successful priest. Tage bought a round, and indicated his gratitude towards the Pilgrim. He asked how long he’d been here, and the answer was: A couple of days, with much resistance from the Gith. Saint Cuthbert appeared to him, granting him the book. The book did radiate magic, and while Tage was holding it he asked if the priest could heal him without holding the book in his hands. He was able to. An interesting turn of development.

The android asked what was needed in order to get his own book. The priest indicated there it a limited edition book, with a total of 5 copies: including the one he held.

Apparently only true believers were rewarded with these books. L-546 Was apparently not a big enough believer to have been rewarded with one, despite his protestation otherwise.

The books appeared around 12 months prior, and the others were spread in other regions. One other copy-holder had met the Pilgrim. He apparently was dwelling in the Corporate Ashlands, though neither John nor L-546 had been aware of him.

Despite L-546’s prayers, he did not immediately receive a book. His expectations of one to arrive soon were high. The other brothers laughed and wondered how well-placed his faith was.

He had not been a part of the Cuthberite clergy, and thus was less likely to be getting it. After a moderate-length discussion of how things might work, the brothers agreed that they would see how things would go. Was the book “in the mail”? Time would tell. But for now the brothers had other plans to discuss. Their next step on the path of pilgrimage as northward, on foot towards the capitol city of Mariosa and beyond, to where the sea meets the Mariosa river.

The brothers commissioned a portrait of him, to commemorate his efforts. Before they parted ways, he indicated another Brother named Lucas was in the region as well, and would perhaps be encountered by the brothers soon. Cuthbert willing.

The brothers were working on ironing out the specifics of the Gith means of infiltrating the world. Was the spell location-keyed? Were they being summoned into a particular place? Was there a way to nullify their infiltration method? Was there a way to change the place to which they were being sent? How about without their knowing?

“Is there a particular place to which the Gith are being sent?” Yes.

“What is the name of the nearest major Gate Point?” Barlizzar (The city they are in).

“What is the building to which they are keyed?” Not a building.

So the brothers worked on getting more information, Tage asked if St. Cuthbert could provide some more concrete information, and he responded that they (The Gith) were merely a nuisance which would be taken care of soon.

The brothers decided to investigate by acquiring a Gith to question for more information about their entry point. Creeping around the rooftops, Tage kept an eye out for a patrol of Gith, and spotted the next one consisting of four. The other brothers hid in a narrow side alley, with Thy’lek appearing to be by himself and very, very drunk. Tage had a mock argument with him, and their loud roughhousing attracted the patrol.

Thy’lek drunkenly bumped into Tage, who responded with a gentle push. Their tustle increased in intensity and volume, with spillt champagne finally pouring a formerly amused gith.

“Get off of me you filthy beast!”, Thy’lek stumbled back into Tage, only to be pushed back at the Gith and falling on his exposed blade.

The gunslinger and ninja positioned themselves for a more advantageous attack when the time came. The leader of the patrol was a lady, who the brothers aimed to capture as she probably knew more than the footsoldiers she was with. Korric suggested she “Stand down”, and she responded that he ought to “Stand down”, and zapped him with a ray which shrank his manly muscles down.

John sipped on a tonic, and a dreadful silence fell over the scene. Ytusk moved in with his spear, striking one of the footsoldiers. Thy’lek struck with his rapier, and L-546 took a shot at the legs of the leader, knocking her off her feet. Koric bum-rushed the gith in front of him, knocking him off his feet and moving behind the still-on-his-feet footsoldier.

Tage leapt from the rooftops into the rear-guard footsoldier, carving his name into the back of the unsuspecting soldier. He was quite angry about it.

The leader realized she was caught in a trap, a silent and deadly trap. She dimension-doored away, but didn’t get terribly far. John followed her desperate escape attempt with a sticky-bomb, trapping her in place once again.

Thy’lek rushed forward on a horse, then attempted to scoop up the sticky mass entrapping her further. L-546 double-tapped the remaining gith footsoldier, the brothers scooped up the corpses, and they moved from alley to alley into a place more suitable for interrogation.

A nearby cart was turned over, and they covered the bodies with hay. They returned to their warehouse, where the bodies were converted into useful organs, blood, and skin: The leader was to be interrogated.
