Catching a Falling Knife - Part 12
"When you go to Jamus, be careful of Operation Death Hunter."
Nothing like an ominous warning to start a quick visit somewhere.
So we retired for the night. And the morning on the Night Sparrow brought caf and tea and other treats. We followed the "The Arrow" hyperspace lane from Dantooine to Jamus, a system with a Type M red dwarf, older than dirt. A dense stellar cluster with 8 planets, one rogue planet, one dark nebula which shifts on its own periodically like it's trying to eat the hyperspace lane nearby. An unwelcome chill of the Dark Side. The usual.
But then a more interesting thing happened. I received a ping that someone had dropped a file into my secure dropbox with Grand Admiral Thrawn. It was a face and voice recording, saying basincally then there have been changes, the situation altered. He had a window of 3 days to form and execute a plan which was "more than just a death scene". He said he needed no absolution for the war crimes he and his fleet performed, but he wanted (what Lt. Jessup received from us) a second chance for those among his crews who followed him and "did their best". He wanted them to have "a second chance with less cruelty hanging over their heads". He suggested we meet again, and that I bring "the people who helped Lieutenant Jessup" to give the same rousing offer of freedom to his people. And he ended the monologue with, "We will talk soon."
We came up with a plan for Miles Vorkosigan (with Emperor Gregor's permission) to accept the defection of the Grand Admiral's second in command who might soon have a horrible disfiguring accident and become, "Darth NetterKerl", (which translates to "Darth Nice Guy").
I fully informed the Grand Admiral with a message to Thrawn's drop box: "If you please, who should we contact, who you would most trust to take the fleet a new direction, preferably the person most folks would least expect to publicly assassinate you and take control of the fleet in a spectacular publicity stunt?"
I had to send a similar message to Emperor Gregor (in an old drop box) and ask if he gives permission for Miles to partake in accepting the defection of a large portion of Grand Admiral Thrawn's fleet in the next 3 standard days.
I prepared to use my newly invented Parasite Detector Glove on Cadbury. If it were going to work, it would have to work on a non-sedated sober target. Vanya volunteered to reduce Cadbury's pain. Specifically, she taught my protégé Almon DeJoy how to reach out into The Math and apply a signal dampening function to Cadbury's brain's pain centers. She verified that he was doing it correctly. We Mentats are rumored to be fast learners after all.
Bang! Pirates flying light freighters were attacking our ships. Captain Kolleen and Danar Vorpadaran made quick work of them.
I found that my parasite detector worked swimmingly well. I asked Omicron if protocol droids or droids like himself would be susceptible to this same cybernetic parasite, and he said most other droids would be susceptible but not him due to his extragalactic origin with a different accounting system and basis of mathematics. (I'll have to ask Davish about it, Omicron said.)
Vanya reminded me of the deadly virus supposedly flowing through Cadbury's and Brocolli's veins. I also asked Omicron for his help against that. Vanya told him what she had learned, that planet Geddi Prime was where this virus was modified and perhaps originated. It was supposedly transmissible through fluid intake not airborne but water supply. Deadly in its active bloom cycle only. It can allegedly be suppressed indefinitely by a "rare chemical" if administered every nine hours. A Hutt is giving it to a lot of people to control them. Allegedly it works on all species in this galaxy, (although only the Reaver Virus is known to do that).
Omicron offered to attempt to detect it and study it and (hopefully) cure it. Almon acquiesced to assist Omicron with pain suppression skills (including application of Corellian vodka and wide-angle stun guns as applicable).
After the pirates were handed over to BoSS, the Bureau of Ships and Services, we made our landing on Jamus. There was a huge black scar on the northern continent, almost like a brand on the planet. Imperial strip mining operations. Multiple old Imperial Star Destroyers were being scrapped for salvageable parts. Someone was taking great pains to restore this planet. The spaceport was mostly repurposed Imperial buildings plus some repurposed Rebel fashion.
We walked through the hangars in the spaceport town of Port Vartek toward the marketplace when we were set upon by a few locals. Danar met (spy, auditor) Bene Gesserit Proctor Aeliss Preva who reminded him of his engagement to House Vortrifrani. She used the Voice on him, but my Vor slipped the mind control in an admirable show of mental strength. He used a Vor beer-trick (rules of propriety and manners) to deflect her aggression. Bravo!
Vanya encountered somebody and talked to him.
I encountered no one, so I enjoyed the view of those encounters. On my datapad I found what appeared to be an abandoned Imperial military post with probably five underground levels for training troops and holding prisoners. (Also, nearby I found a tchotchke shop specializing in antique imperial occupier trinkets.) I suggested to the general public that we were tourists interested in touring the dark history of this place. We let Danar drive a sporty rental swoop, including the extra insurance in case of accident. Yoshi gave excellent directions.
Vanya and Davish decided to go talk to some people before they joined us. I gave her datapad a tracking program so she would be able to find our exact location later (and vice versa).
In the (typical I assume) Imperial Military Terror Station IDM-996 , Danar Vorpadaran inspected the carnage of people who had apparently been killed with tiny missiles before they even drew their own weapons. Yoshi picked up an armored shoulder pauldron which bore the insignia of Ravengard. (They recently tried to kill us.) Danar took a calculated risk and announced our (his) presence by calling any survivors who might be feigning death, giving the impression we might rescue them.
That was when we heard a quiet scuffing of someone or some thing crawling toward us inside the air vent.
She was a Dathomirian Zabrak, younger than Yoshi. She was afraid of Yoshi. I wonder what that means. Danar gained her confidence and carefully pulled her out of the vent. She needed a medbay. Yoshi lead us to it. It was still located where it was when she attended training here. We passed more dead Void Widows and Ravengard. I hastily reactivated the savaged medical droid and did some quick temporary repairs to it. As it helped to heal her, she gave her name as Sera Nolath and told us the Ravengard had attacked. The "woman in the Imperial Intelligence uniform" called them Ravengard. She was coordinating, not commanding. It could have been Ysanne Issard aka "Iceheart" by her looks.
Nolath gave Danar a data chip, saying there were "Cell backups the Hutts don't own". She asked him to rescue them.
At my Vor's bidding, I removed a memory chip from one of the Mandalorian Ravengard and reconstructed his audio/video recording of his last moments. Outside these ruins, his Person in Charge (PiC) said that the Kadjidic's instructions were clear: No Witnesses. No Trace. Hutts' business stays Hutts' business. They entered the ruins. They were lead by a person who looked identical to Iceheart, most of the time. (I took a screenshot of her face, a screenshot of her face at that moment when the facial hologram net had a momentary flaw, and a bit of video of her walk.) The Iceheart identity fooled many of the void widows. It was the keystone to the attack.
Then, according to Vanya's transmission, ten Ravengard landed as Vanya and Davish approached us in a nondescript clunker of a vehicle.

Questions Answered:
How did we temporarily disable Iceheart's cyborg parasite? Get them drunk.
Did Iceheart reopen the Void Widow program? The Void Widows at Station IDM-996 trusted Iceheart when they thought they saw her. And Nolath said there were some cells NOT owned by the Hutts. The video left as evidence would lead one to believe the Hutts had attacked what appeared to be their own assets.
