I find it extremely hard to actually comprehend what I'm reading when there's music playing in the background (I can't even study while listening to music). If this was able to be toggled with the default to off, then I would be fine with it. And thinking of those that are reading articles on someone's world while on break at work - most offices I know don't want music playing from computers. True they could mute the speakers, but if they aren't expecting the music, they could still get in trouble for that split second that the music blares across the office.
Auto playing videos on a web page or site that isn't specifically a video hosting service are a scourge of the internet and should never be used.
If it's togglable and defaulted to be off then what's the problem?
Please no. I'd prefer to choose my own music when browsing. I'm more than happy to give a listen to a youtube video on a site, but I really hate it, when I open a website and it blurts music from the speakers, while I actually have my own music running in the background.
Maybe if the suggestion is optional? You could add a link in a special box in the article and the reader could choose weather to play or not? the default would be off, but it seems like a great compromise. It won't exist at all in articles for those who don't want it, and it is optional for the readers of those who do want it.
I see you never used Myspace or Tumblr. As a veteran of the latter: you do not actually want this. It's hellish.
I would never use this myself. It's already possible to add music/ambience suggestions to articles with spotify/youtube links, so I don't think this kinda of autoplay feature is needed at all. If this was implemented, I would drastically reduce my exploration of other people's worlds on WA just because I would constantly be running the risk (when opening articles) of getting my ears blasted with the audio of an unstoppable Youtube video. Hence the downvote.
As much as I would enjoy hearing what people think would go well with an article having it forced upon me is not a good thing. With anxiety and ADHD this would play havok with my mental state.
No. This is horrible.
I remember Myspace. I also remember tumblr. I hated when people did this.
WOW, you must really hate having people read your work.
Autoplaying sound/music was an extremely popular thing on tumblr blogs back in about 2010 and all the way through to about 2015 (some cases even longer than that). It has always been horribly annoying, universally hated. In the very recent times it's been seeing a comeback of sorts.... I guess if you hate your readers, it's a wonderful idea.
I'm afraid that automatically playing sound is not exactly the best idea. It can be hard to get people to even look at your work, and adding something that people will want to immediately turn off is less than ideal and likely to make the issue worse. I cant say for sure but there are probably ways of doing this with css sorcery, BUT if there is, it's probably not allowed on WA and there's a reason you never see it if it is allowed. Personally I like the way it is. I can suggest my own ambience using YouTube and others. While plenty of arguments are made here, my big concern is preference and choice. Should the reader prefer their own ambience, or none at all, they should be able to make that choice themselves and not be forced to listen to what the author of the article prefers.
No, for the reasons other downvoters already listed. But a good alternative is to place the video/audio prominently at the top of the article so that the reader can start it before looking at the text. Maybe a dedicated section could be added to articles, below the title or above the side bar.
As many have already said, autoplay in general is a bad idea. Most modern browsers are even doing their best to block autoplay without user interaction. That said you can already embed youtube, spotify or soundcloud links to music and a user can decide to play it themselves.
Echoing other thoughts on this - autoplaying sounds can be cool, but are nearly always unwanted, and there would be no way on ensuring worlds don't play loud/inappropriate music as their ambient sound.
I agree wtih A Adorable Goblin and SolarCat02. Most of the time, my volume is up and I don't like being startled half to death with strange music suddenly playing through my speakers.
Burn it with FIRE! AUTOPLAY IS THE DEVIL - 666 Be gone foul deamon!
While I agree that ambiance is lovely, this suggestion would cause problems for me and quite likely others. This conversation has come up before, and it has been stated that autoplaying music will not be added to WA as the most common reaction to autoplay music is to hunt for where it's coming from to close the article. You CAN embed a YouTube or SoundCloud or all sorts of other audio formats into your article, but the reader will always have to click play. Which gives them the power to decide whether they want the ambiance or not. Honestly I am happy with the current solution. I want the power to determine whether or not audio is of interest to me. When I read articles it is often on my phone in situations where autoplaying music would be a problem. (I have kids, for starters, who will instantly stop what they are doing to see what is making that noise.) If this was implemented and one of the worlds I followed regularly used an autoplay feature I would likely have to stop reading their articles.
