Magic

Magic is the manipulation of the energies of creation. These energies are the remnants of those primordial events which gave birth to our universe. The shaping of the Universe from the Elemental Chaos by The Xeun, for example, was responsible for the largest amount of these energies; however, the continued interactions of the Planes of Existence with one another have created a large amount more.

These energies, known most commonly as Mana, exist in different forms throughout the Universe and are similar to the energies that form the souls of living creatures. Magic is used when one attempts to manipulate these energies. It takes practice to learn how to do so effectively; in fact, many mages spend their entire lives studying this discipline without ever mastering it.

Magic itself, that is the manipulation of these energies, can be divided into three categories: Arcane, Celestial, and Druidic magic.
  • Arcane Magic directly manipulates the physical world through the use of spells or rituals that alter the natural flow of mana within the area affected. These directly utilize the remnant energies left over from Creation itself.
  • Celestial Magic utilizes energies gifted by celestial beings such as the deities of the Sceocian Pantheon or higher beings to create effects within the world. They are often considered 'divine magic', but they are not limited solely to gods.
  • Druidic magic is somewhat of a middle ground between the two, although its origin is celestial in nature, it utilized the native sources of mana found in the environment, allowing for greater control of the world around us.
There are many methods of manipulating magic, each with its own strengths and weaknesses.
Mages learned these methods through years of study and experimentation. Though some beings, such as those with innate magical talent or Chosen, could learn them at an early age, most mages must devote themselves to their studies and master the various forms before they can even attempt to use many of the powerful magics available to them.

Properties

  • Manifestation-A mage's individual spell craft often influences the unique appearance of the mage's magic. As a spellcaster becomes more powerful, this effect becomes more pronounced. As such, the magics of the most powerful spellcasters in the world of Calas have very unique styles depending on their caster
  • Resistance-Like all energy, when traveling through a medium, like magic does in the material plane, only so much can exist in an area at any one time. This means that if two mages cast too powerful of spells near each other they may cause a tear of sorts to form, allowing the excess energy to escape to the void. Depending on which Plane of Existence the magic is cast on the severity of this phenomenon can vary, as they vary in terms of energy density. For instance, the Celestial Plane allows for much higher concentrations of Magic than the Material Plane
    • Mana Sickness-As a side effect of Magic's property of resistance, a mortal spellcaster can only channel a certain amount of magical energy through their body at one time.

Surpassing this limit, though difficult, is possible; however it risks permanent harm to the Spellcaster

  • Soul-An important aspect of magic is the soul. Although Mana can be stored in inanimate objects, Magic requires the life force of a living creature to fuel it.
