Free Territory of Galanthis

The Free Territory of Galanthis, often referred to simply as Galanthis, is located on a peninsula on the western side of Austra. It is 1,600 m2 in area, and shares the continent with The Brilliant Empire and the Principality of Arion. It lies at the juncture of the Crater Sea and the Great Sea, and shares maritime borders with the Kingdom of Delryn. The capital is called Oriath.

Geography

Physical Geography
Galanthis is a fairly small territory, and fairly flat. Almost half of their border is coastline, with the peninsula on which it sits forming the channel between the Crater Sea and the Great Sea. This strategic location offers them the ability to assert control of all water traffic who wish to pass this direction instead of going the long way around either Austra or Westra.   Climate and Biomes
The territory is mainly grassland. They experience four seasons with varying middle temperatures generally 25-80* depending on the season.

Government
Galanthis is a mercantile republic, which has a separation of powers through both their popularly-elected head of state, called the Premier, an elected legislature, and a judicial branch.

The head of state, or Premier, is elected through a popular vote from all citizens of the territory. As citizenship is rather loosely defined, this process can be messy and easily influenced. The election takes place every ten years, and the election process itself takes two. During the first years candidates must declare their intent to run and be confirmed to run by the legislative branch. Following that, citizens of the territory have a full year to cast their vote, but must do so in person in the capital city.

The legislature is elected by the guilds, unions, lodges, etc. of the territory. Each officially recognized organization is allowed to appoint a sitting senator, by whatever means their own bylaws set. This senator serves a term of three years, and elections are purposefully staggered. The number of senators varies, as guilds rise and fall. Guilds must be of a certain size to apply for a senator seat, and if they are not of a sufficient size may be forced to combine with another group or groups.

The judicial branch is a sitting panel of five judges who, once appointed, serve a life term. When a seat is open appointees are nominated by the Premier, but must be confirmed by 3/4 vote of the sitting legislature.   Foreign Relations

Galanthis' entire economy rests on the laurels of trade and shipping. They are reknown for training the mages who make seafaring possible on this planet.

The arms of Galanthis are usually displayed on a round or oval shield. They are Quartered per cross turquoise and white; in first and fourth quarter scaled black, in second quarter an anchor gold, and in third quarter a dolphin gold.
