Pinebrook Gord Settlement in When the Curtain has fallen | World Anvil

Pinebrook Gord

A few kilometers away from the city, surrounded by The weird wilderness, there is a 10th-century gord that somehow survived not only the passage of time but also the merging of the material and spiritual world that happened during the Extinction. It seems that both the Slavic spells used to ward off the evil creatures and later the Christian blessings protect it completely from the influence of the Spirits and possible low Familiarity levels. Because of that, some people chose it as their new home.   As a monument and an open-air museum, the gord has been conservated and maintained in a pretty good shape.
The settlement consists of two parts: the ancient gord itself and some more modern (19th-century) buildings that held some of the relics and served as a workplace for the museum's management.   The gord is an old city that once held hundreds of inhabitants. All of its structures are mainly built from wood. As a defense, it is surrounded by a moat and a palisade. But its primary defense is the mix of being in the middle of the Weird wilderness and its protective charms. Those two equally keep away other humans and spirits.

Inhabitants

The inhabitants of the gord managed to adapt both to living surrounded by the wilderness, managing to deal almost without technology, and to the unusual cuisine that uses both meats of spirits and Weird fruits.   Some of them consist of people who already worked in the museum. Staying here protected them from hearing The Word in the first place. Others drifted towards them when cities became dangerous but before the wilderness around them became unfamiliar. Once in a while, someone new might join them, but their numbers haven't changed much since the end of Extinction.

Leaders

It seems like people chose the older couple of foresters as their leaders. While anyone can suggest their opinions, expertise, and solutions to the problems affecting their society, anything related to their survival always goes through them, since their solutions tend to work the best.

Trading

Once in a while, a caravan leaves the Pinebrook Grod. The goods they bring consist mostly of Weird fruits and hides and fur of various Spirits. They tend to buy technology and luxurious items, anything that'll make their lives in the wilderness easier.
