Navigation on Waking Materia
Navigation
Material navigation is generally measured by two axes: degrees of rotation from a reference point (usually clockwise from Stargrave) and horizontal distance from the central point of the The Sunken Expanse, ending at the Planar Margins.
When giving rotational directions relative to a position, one usually uses the terms West/Western/Westard (clockwise from "12 o'clock", which is usually Stargrave) and East/Eastern/Eastward (counter-clockwise from 12 o'clock). When giving radial directions, one usually uses the terms Inner/Inward/Coreward (toward the centre of the Sunken Expanse) and Outer/Outward/Voidward (toward the planar margins).Units
Rotational units are degrees of rotation from a reference point, which is usually clockwise from Stargrave (effectively '12:00' on a standard Earth clock). Radial units are usually metres or kilometres from the centre of the Sunken Expanse (and therefore the centre of the plane).
To give an example, the Ruskanseyrie in Valamon City is about 290° clockwise from Stargrave and about 822 km from the planar centre. Thus its location could simply be written as simply as 290°/822km, {290/822} or something similar. If units are not shown, a useful rule of thumb is that no landmass is within 360 km from the planar core, so the horizontal distance will always be larger than the radial one.Quadrant System
Materians usually divide the plane into four quadrants, generally called the Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta Quadrants. In terms of the above methods, the Alpha Quadrant is defined as 0-90° from Stargrave, the Beta Quadrant would be 90-180°, Gamma would be 180-270° and Delta would be 270-360°.
