"Did you really think I was the only one here? There's literally hundreds of us everywhere, from the deserts to the mountains, to the forests and valleys!

I just like showing myself and messing with you humans more than they do!"

Fairies are a group of tiny but extraordinarily powerful beings that can be found in small numbers all over Vreathe. Originally they came from the greater moon Kalbeth and have their origins there going back to the beginning of the Silver Age.

Most humans don't know their actual purpose in this world. Some say they are the embodiment of chaos, spreading terror across the world. Some say they are sadistic evil beings that love seeing others suffer. The Elves think they are here to fulfill a specific purpose, though most fairies don't actually do that at all.

While one specific fairy, Xana, has played a part in history and is the most well known in the Kingdoms of Cassel, there are several other lesser known fairies such as Azura, Lirienne, and Belladonna. The vast majority hide away from the world and want nothing to do with it.

Origin

In order to understand the origin of fairy folk, hundreds of thousands of years of history needs to be looked at. Starting far back at the beginning of the Silver Age, the Olimian civilization was technologically and magically advanced. They quickly spread across the world of Vreathe, but it wasn't enough. They also reached for the stars.

Queen Lapis II of the Kwin Tribe, instructed her scientists to find ways to terraform worlds. Her intention was to turn the moons Kalbeth and Nodan into paradise. Despite the long lives of the silver race and Lapis II's reign of over 13,000 years, she failed. Her terraforming efforts were put on hold by the next ruler King Gigas.

The next queen of the Olimians and one of the greatest, Queen Issia, sent ships to the moon Kalbeth, also known as the Greater Moon at the start of her reign and started the process of terraforming the world. It took several tens of thousands of years, but by the end of her reign, Kalbeth was a breathable world filled with life brought over from Vreathe.

Many of the Silver Race were unwilling to go settle on another world, but thousands of people still went to the new world, mainly of the Kwin tribe, but also of several others.

The Moon Folk and the Moon Goddess

In time, these people became known as the Moon Folk. They developed a distinct culture and language separate from the Olimians. Through the many millennia of the Silver Age, tensions slowly grew between the Moon Folk and the Olimians, until relations between them were severed entirely.

Partway into the Silver Age, the Goddess Kalbeth, the one the moon is named after, returned after a long absence of wandering the stars. She saw people living on her world. The moon folk immediately started worshiping her even though Kalbeth had no demands that they do so. She allowed them to live on the world. She started to teach the moon folk several secrets she learned about the universe, about magic and life, and about the eventual end of everything. In many respects, Kalbeth's teachings helped the Moon Folk civilization become greater than the Olimians. In others, they were still lesser.

For most of history Kalbeth was known as a wanderer, but during the second half of the Silver Age, she was a great teacher and leader of the moon folk.

The Cataclysm and the creation of Fairies

Towards the end of the Silver Age, humans had gone to war with the Gods. Some gods like Kalbeth stayed out of their way. Most other gods like Laza, Goddess of shadow, Alom, God of Infinity, and more were imprisoned, mainly on the two moons of Vreathe. This upwelling of Aether started to change the Moonfolk in subtle ways.

The big change came with a cataclysm at the end of the Silver Age. The Olimian humans built a great Tower, so large it reached the heavens. It was made almost entirely out of Aethercite. When the tower was activated it was supposed to grant the Olimians immortality. Instead the tower exploded, sending a wave of magical energy across the world of Vreathe and far beyond. Physical laws temporarily stopped working as this wave spread forth, catching the aetheric energy of the gods as it went, furthering altering reality.

For the Silver Race, all of them were altered. Most just fell apart and stop existing. Others turned into indescribable masses of flesh. Then there were goblins, orcs, centaurs, elves, and more. Elves were the lucky ones. their lifespans became much longer than for most part they were physically unaltered.

On the greater moon, most of the moon folk turned into elves. Temporarily the swirling aetheric energies made them become one with the goddess Kalbeth, and this trace of aether can still be seen in the Iron Age as the Moon Trace in a number of people. A few hundred of these elves absorbed significantly more aether than the rest, and absorbed aether from a number of gods, turning them into the fairies.

"And thus Chaos engulfed everything. The Olimians for their greed were destroyed and altered beyond recognition. They didn't need the gods to punish them for their crime. The Universe did it for us."

- The Fall of Silver, Chapter 26

Arrival on Vreathe

Around a thousand fairies had been created. They shared in Kalbeth's deep understanding of the universe, including in her gift of future sight. They could see everything that would happen, but only to the end of the Iron Age. After the wave of chaos passed and physical laws resettled, the fairies still had enormous power, but they lost their future sight as quickly as they gained it.

Most fairies didn't care, but many were concerned about everything ending and they wanted to do something about it. Kalbeth went to wander the stars once again, trying to find some way to prevent the end. A few fairies went with her. Others went to Vreathe and spread across the world.

Because of their power, several fairies played a large part in many tales throughout the Bronze and Iron Ages, subtly or not so subtly altering history as they saw fit, in an attempt to prevent the end. Occasionally they get glimpses of the future when they alter something, but still they cannot see the end of everything after the Iron Age.

As the long years went on, many fairies lost their way, and instead live hidden away in pocket worlds, not wishing to interfere with the world any longer. Others are still quite active on Vreathe.

Characteristics

Physical Description

In their fairy form, a fairy stands 15 to 20 centimeters in height. Their eye and hair color varies, as does their skin color. Most of their facial features can be described as soft and round.

Fairies also have a set of wings that look like butterfly wings in most cases but can take on any appearance. The colors vary between different faries. These wings are made of pure magic given physical form.

All fairies also have a human form that very much looks like they originally did in the Silver Age. Most of them stand around 1.6 meters tall.

Regardless of the form they take, fairies seem to always be smiling, giving off warmth, radiance, and power, showing an appearance that very few beings on Vreathe, even gods, can compare to.

Immortality

While the vast majority of the Silver Race was destroyed in their chase for immortality, some of them did manage to get it as all fairies are immortal. This is thought to be because of the many different types of aether they were hit with as chaos engulfed them.

They aren't just immortal in that they have a long life. they literally can't be killed or destroyed. Attempts have been made through the long years to freeze, melt, crush, and otherwise destroy them.

King Selevar of a Bronze Age elven kingdom attempted to destroy one fairy with a spell that created a singularity. The entire city he was in was destroyed, sucked into the singularity that then exploded, scarring the countryside. The fairy just flew away unharmed.

Power

The power of a fairy is considered to be just under that of a god, but there is quite a large difference in what power each has access to. Gods are being made of pure aether, the purpose behind their creation permeates every part of their being, giving them power over only a small number of domains. Flora for example has power over all plants, while Laza has power over light and shadow. Kalbeth can also control light, but also gravity. Their power over these domains is just below absolute.

Fairies, due to the many different pieces of aether they absorbed in their bodies, have no domain. They have no area of specialty. Their magic can do just about anything they desire or imagine. Their magic is also quite powerful, and the Bear Slaying is a perfect example of this power in action. Some fairies are known to grant wishes to those they favor or those that impress them. They have also been known to form Bloodpacts with certain humans.

Azura's two main forms.

Belladonna's two main forms.

Personality

All fairies give off an aura of kindness, and seem like genuinely helpful beings. This is not the perception that most people have of them, as a fairy's greatest most notable deeds also usually turn out to be their worst. An example was when the fairy Belladonna froze every river and lake around the Sea of Wrethas, to include the sea itself. She did this because King Vernador XIV of Cassel insulted her.

Because of this, fairies are seen as sadistic and tricky things, easy to anger and impossible to please. If a fairy is angry, it is impossible to know until they start casting their magic, and if it gets to that point, it would be wise to beg for forgiveness, though they usually don't care.

Some fairies are incredibly easy to please. All Xana requires is her weight in chocolate (which isn't much) and not only will she give you an incredibly powerful piece of aethercite, she'll help you in other ways too.
