Renewist Atovism
Renewist Atovism is a denomination of Atovism that split off from the Orthodox church in the years following The Gateway Summit.
History
Renewist Atovists were the first major subsect to break off from the Orthodox Atovist Church over disagreements following the gateway summit. In 1537 SE, a council of bishops in Hedgewall appointed the first High Bishop of Renewal. The original intent was to reform the Atovist church in totatilty, hense the name, but the orthodox priesthood immedietely identified the movement as a heretical subsect and impeached the Hedgewall bishops. After this, their supporters formed the Renewist Atovist Church. Renewist practicioners faced early persecution in Estaria, forcing their higher clergy to move to Prekha, which remains a renewist stronghold to this day. Still, many of their priests and clergy remained in Estaria during the early days, opening houses of worship in Solgrad despite their religious persecution. Due to the unpopularity of the orthodox church's strict laws on sexual morality, renewist sympathy grew in Solgrad, causing the orthodox practicing royals to crack down even harder. In 1591, King Gaelin the Bloody passed the Treatise of Religious Purity, which expelled Renewist priests from Solgrad. This lead to the Renewist Upheaval, where Renewist rioters broke into Lonir Point Keep and captured the Estarian throne. The Renewist church would then dominate Solgrad for the entirety of the War of the Gates, until it was finally returned to a dominantly Orthodox council of lords. The practice of Renewism remains strong in Prekha, Landren, the Enclave of the Free Peoples and southern Estaria.Differences in Philosophy from other Atovists
Renewists believe in an interpretation of the spirit of The Eulogy. They believe that the book was written with an intent that can be understood by listening to the hymns as a whole, rather than a strict interpretation of the words. For example, other denominations of Atovism strictly translate the sin of "covetous greed" to mean that it is sinful to desire what someone else owns. Renewists believe that this instead extends to all forms of greed. However, they also believe that intention to be sacred and decry any attempt to edit the words of the hymns. This is why their version of The Book of Aduvir deviates from the modern translation, where Aduvir's aspect of creation was changed to passion instead of lust. Renewist's believe in the original translation as it appeared before the Gateway Summit.Unique Rituals from other Atovists
In worship, Renewist ceremony is only slightly different from Orthodox services. One major difference is that Renewists have thier day of worship on Solday, instead of Zekday. Renewists also prefer stringed instruments over brass instruments and every Renewist church has a specially trained priest called a Harpsman (though they are not always men) who plays during oral service.Unique Laws from other Atovists
Renewists allow Chimera into the priesthood.
