Renewist Upheaval
The Renewist Upheaval was an insurrection in Solgrad in 1594 SE. The event followed a series of smaller revolts by members of the Renewist Atovist church, as a response to the Treatise of Religious Purity and King Gaelin the Bloody's tyranical suppression and execution of Renewists.
Details
The upheaval began as a series of riots throughout Solgrad, two days after the public execution of Mollinel Reeves on the thirtieth of First Light, 1594. The riots were impossible to control as a majority of Estaria's conscripted military was in conflict with Prekha. Additionally, a significant portion of Solgrad's city watch where sent from Hedgewall and made no attempt to disperse the rioters, and some even joined them. The total number of the mob is estimated to be over a million. On the second day of the upheaval, Renewist rebels broke into Lonir Point Keep and killed Catherine Avadine. King Gaelin was forced to flee Solgrad. By the morning of the fifteenth of First Light, 1594 SE, Lonir Point Keep was sacked and the city watch loyal to King Gaelin were either killed or fled. For the first time in its city, the impenetrable city of Solgrad had been conquered.Consequences
The revolutionaries falsely asserted that King Gaelin the Third was dead, and convened a council of Renewist bishops to appoint a new king of Estaria, King Saul of Hedgewall, Gaelin's cousin. Bishops of Orthodox Atovism were shocked and outraged by the event, and had King Gaelin exiled from Estaria along with the men who remained loyal to him. Estaria was not unified, and a majority of its population were still followers of Orthodox Atovism. The church organized a coalition of nobles, mercenaries, and the majority of Estaria's conscripted military fighting in Prehka to retake Solgrad and instate a new king. This would become the War of the Gates.Legacy
In 2167, the Renewist Upheaval is rarely spoken of in Solgrad, which is now once again dominated by the orthodox faction of Atovists. Areas like Prekha and The Enclave of the Free Peoples, which are strongholds of renewist thought, celebrate the event with feasts and festivals. To Renewist Atovists of the modern day, the event is seen as the day that their ideology escaped from the boot of the previous church and became an independent ideology of its own.
