The Immortal

The Immortal (a.k.a. The Deathless Guardian, The Slayer)

The rugged looking merchant guard lounged against the wagon as he watched her loading your goods. "Looking to travel through The Blacklands? Don't forget your offering." He takes a large sack from his belt and extends it towards her. She take it, the weight surprising you, as if filled with sand. Prying the drawstrings open, pure white powder grains fill the inside, and the saline smell of the ocean filled her nose.  "If you're going anywhere near The Sanctuary, make sure to leave an offering at the edge of the salt," the guards voice drew her eyes back up, "Make sure The Immortal watches you pass in favor. Thats five gold pieces for that by the way" She pursed her lips with doubt, but filled the mans hand with coin none the less, "I hope this is worth the gold." His stark white teeth flash in the grin that splits his windworn brown face. "Its much better than putting yourself on the other side of the scales. I've seen whats left of those he's done with."
~An exchange overheard in Amoth
The being known as The Immortal is one of the Ascendants of Koria, a number of entities that lived and fought during the time of The Sundering. Through means unknown, even to themselves, these legends made flesh were able to draw the raw power that was unleashed with the death of the various Gods and Elder Primordials during that time, and ascended to a form of Godhood. While not true Gods in the normal sense, they are worshiped by various large pockets of the population throughout all of Koria, reguardless of race or creed.

While seen by many as a violent and dangerous figure within the already turmultuous area of The Blacklands, it is also said the The Immortal is a truly heartbreaking figure, a being so corrupted by self hatred and madness, yet unable to find release of death.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

While The Immortal does not keep a specific divine sigil, it is commonplace for those who pray to him to do so to pure salt, or salted earth. Roadside wayshrines to him often contain a simple bowl filled with salt, filled periodically by those who wander the tretcherous paths of The Blacklands. Moreover, it is customary for those who pass by The Sanctuary to leave a bag of salt at the edge of the mile wide salt flat that surrounds the area as an offering to the Ascendant, in hopes he will allow you to safely pass by or through his domain.

Personal history

In his younger life, the man who is know as The Immortal was named Taheer. He was an expectionally devout cleric of the God Bane. His early life is lost to time, but he is remembered as rising swiftly through the ranks of the Church of Bane and joining the Deep Mystery, the ruling level of priests within the church, even ascending to High Inperceptor, the highest known position within the Church of Bane. During the siege of Ahm, it was he who suggested and convinced the leaders of Ahm to allow he and the others of the Deep Mystery to preform a ritual to summon their God to defend the city from Imix. While this was done with the hopes to sway the city to Banes' worship, it ultimately failed due to Bane being held to completely in the Material Plane, allowing Imix to overwhelm and kill him. Taheer alone survived the ritual, being forcably teleported away by the other defenders of Ahm, while the remaining memembers of the Deep Mystery were pinned by their own ritual and died along with their God. Along with all other followers of Bane, he suffered greatly when their divine magics ceased to work. He blamed himself for the death of his God, and even attempted to end his own life, only to discover he had drawn in a majorty of Bane's power released on death, rendering with nearly God-like power, but to his horror, also rendering him immortal. Whether this was a blessing gifted to the last and most devout follower of Bane, or a curse placed by the Gods last throws of power, remains unknown. Reguardless, the being who became known as The Immortal found that no matter how he died, he found himself crawling his way out from one of the pillars of salt that surrounded The Sanctuary, each crudely carved in his likeness.

Mental Trauma

The Immortal blames himself for not only what happened in Ahm, but for the death of his God, Bane. Originally seeking to kill himself in penance for his guilt, the mental strain of repeatedly dying and being reborn within The Sanctuary has mentally broken him. His tormented mind has compounded the fear of a second Sundering, leaving him in a perpetural state of paranoid panic. This, added into his inability to die and enormous power would usually be cause for concern, but he seems to have no care or drive to leave the lands surrounding The Sanctuary unless something within is removed.

Morality & Philosophy

Truely Neutral, The Immortal seeks only the defense of The Sanctuary. Nothing else is of concern.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

The main motivation of The Immortal to seek to prevent another Sundering. He is said to have spent several centuties after the Sundering travelling the continent, collecting powerful items of magic by any means nessisary, sequestering thosehe could not outright destroy within the white stone tower of The Sanctuary. He violently now violently defends the tower from orcish warbands seeking to test their power, and roving bands of demonic cultists seeking to plunder its wealth of magical treasure.
