Queen Brighid I Character in Varzzen | World Anvil

Queen Brighid I

Description

Large even for a bumble, Brighid is among the strongest and most skilled warriors of all Varzzen. She is always dressed in an attire fit for a warrior queen.

History

Born in Auroma, Brighid attended a renowned soldier caste's combschool. Her diligence and skill let her rise through the ranks quickly after graduating earning a station as an officer and a priestess of Aurius, the Noble Breeze. Her early career was unremarkable: Auroma was in a long period of peace, and there was little a soldier could do. Even the cautionary tales of the war against the arachs had begun to sound tired and outdated. Still, Brighid remained steadfast in her readiness to fulfill her duty, even if it meant doing little. Her early career was marked by uneventful patrols, hunting dangerous animals and wrestling drunks. She only fought criminals a few times - most of the criminals Brighid caught surrendered without a fight.

Her entire world was turned around by the Tunnel War. Now, Auroma needed soldiers more than it had in centuries. With Brighid's lead, the village she was assigned to could withstand the White Flood. Assault turned to siege, end eventually the entire offense degenerated to a stalemate.

Brighid was also the one to break the stalemate. Seeing that necrites had withdrawn troops from Auroma to Cavana, she seized the opportunity and launched an aerial assault to the now weakened outpost. This assault broke the necrite defense line, and the Detrinians had to choose between a quick retreat or staying between groups of revitalized Auroman forces. It didn't take too long until the last necrite was pushed out of Auroma. For the first time, the war moved to the Empire's soil - with Brighid leading the charge.

She went from victory to victory, driving the necrites further and further back. Every victory brought Brighid more fame and prestige, until she eventually rose to the rank of general. She led the attack on Throne of Power, defeated the tyrant of Detrin in a duel, and destroyed any hope Detrin had of victory, or even conditional surrender.

After the war, Royal Hexagon annexed the most fertile land of the Detrinian Empire, Sweetwood, and turned it into a new country, Aciaroma. Thanks to her successes during the Tunnel War, Brighid was crowned the queen of the new country. She took Detrin's old capital for her new home and fortress. She was tasked with the challenging job of unifying the war-torn land of Sweetwood into a cohesive and harmonious nation, and to prevent all necrite aggression towards the Royal Hexagon.

Present

Despite her many accomplishments, Brighid's reign has been marred by certain obstacles. While she has maintained peace for her entire reign, she has not succeeded turning Aciaroma from an occupied territory into a unified nation. A large standing army can keep the civilian population in line, but such hard methods do not win over the hearts of the population. Brighid's prioritization of her identity as a general over her role as queen has prevented her from truly unifying Aciaroma.

Perhaps the greatest point of contention about Brighid's rule is her position on faith. The last tyrant of Detrin called on the necrite god Katisan to guide them during the war. To maintain peace, Brighid expelled the old priests of Katisan, and appointed priests of Aurius to oversee all church activities. Not only must all religious services of Katisan be held in Insect-Common, the priests are to direct all worshippers towards other gods of Order Pantheon. Despite numerous protests and pleas, Brighid has upheld this policy.

In addition to her controversial stance on religion, Brighid’s steadfast loyalty to her birth nation of Auroma is a massive point of contention. Despite being the queen of Aciaroma, Brighid still sees herself as Auroman, and often makes decisions that only benefit her country of birth. This includes sending valuable resources to Auroma, and receiving military support in return. However, due to frequently favoring Auroma, her allies in Cavana and Rusterov are often let grated by her decisions.
