Throne of Power

Throne of Power is among the oldest settlements of Varzzen, and the first settlement in Aciaroma. Before its construction, necrites lived in caves, trees and tents, always in small numbers. Throne of Power was the first place necrites lived in large numbers, and has been the largest necrite city since its construction.

The most notable feature of the capital is the fortress at its center, Peerless. Unlike most fortresses, Peerless has two keeps, a primary and a secondary one. The primary keep is the shorter one, and it's where the Tyrants of Detrin have lived for millenia. The taller, but narrower, secondary keep houses the central church of Katisan. The highest room there is always kept empty, for it is where Katisan would stay, should he return to Sweetwood.

The buildings closest to Peerless are homes of artisans. Throne of Power also has a large marketplace, with countless necrites passing through each day. For these reasons, the buildings near Peerless are prestigious and highly sought after. Only the best artisans can live there - the competition would drive any weaker inhabitant out.

Further away are the houses of common laborers, whom the capital needs like any other city. Just like with the artisans, the commoners’ houses are in demand, as even a mere laborer can make a good living in the huge city.

Beyond the laborer's homes are the homes of the wealthier farmers whose farms are near the city. The convenient location of the homes makes selling and buying easy, while also protecting the farmers from animals and criminals alike.

The city is bordered by great, thick walls. Guards live near the walls. As the capital keeps growing, the walls are moved further out. This expensive project is only done once enough of the farmers are pushed out by ever-increasing prices of the capital. The rulers of the city understand well the need for food.

Outside the walls are shacks and holes of the poorer farmers, ones whose farms are further away. Among them live other poor laborers, beggars and the like. Throne of Power promises a better future for all of them, and as long as they can hope, someone will remain there.

Outside the city are both traditional and forest farms. The capital is in constant need of food, construction material and the oils that the trees make. Among the farms are clusters of houses where the farmers live. Some of the clusters are large enough to be considered hamlets on their own.

A significant landmark of Throne of Power is the Arena of Hope. Its primary purpose is to keep the duels contained and observed during the Month of Challenges. During other months it is used for various other purposes, including feasts and gladiatorial games. Arena of Hope also has a church of Katisan, the largest infirmary in Sweetwood and a fighting school.

But Throne of Power is not just above ground: all homes have cellars, and streets have ramps to the tunnels underground. The city is almost mirrored underground: houses, markets and even Peerless extends there. At the bottom are the sewers, taking all of the city's filth away. Only Cavana has greater tunnels than Throne of Power.

Present

Throne of Power suffered relatively minor damage during the Tunnel War. By the time forces of Royal Hexagon got there, the Detrinian Empire had already spent all of its resources. There were a few tunnels out, but feeding the entire city through them unnoticed was impossible, even if there had been food outside. The siege ended quickly, and while many lives were lost, the city itself took little damage.

Much has changed in Throne of Power after the Tunnel War. It is now the capital of a new nation, Aciaroma. IInstead of a tyrant, Queen Brighid I currently resides in the primary tower. Many artisans have been pushed away by seemingly endless soldiers of the nations of Royal Hexagon. They constantly patrol the streets and tunnels, putting fear in any necrite they come across. Even the churches have changed: services are now held in Insect-Common, and vespoid priests monitor both the worshippers and the priests of Katisan for any sign of rebellion.
