Personal history
The Smiling God was once an Archdemon by the name of Elaios, and the ruler of the Abyss' 380th layer. However, after committing a crime of unknown scale that angered Enaldir, his soul was imprisoned within The Velvet Room.
The warden of the Velvet Room - Igor - decided to toy with this demon. Using an extended manifestation of the Velvet Room (which he frequently did in places connected to his own essence, such as the Citadel of Woe and the Atelier of the Eye), he created the Chromatic Palace. Elaios was imprisoned within this manifestation, and over the course of centuries, was forced to shift into the corrupted creature known as the Smiling God.
Upon the Festival of the Blood Moon in CY 1679, the Chromatic Palace was ordered to hang over the town of Valenacht. Due to the town's inherent strangeness, it would receive no help from outsiders as it would be slowly encroached upon by this vast structure. As the summer continued, more and more citizens of the town fell under the influence of the Smiling God - worshipping it as a deity that would bring them salvation.
At the beginning of Horsebow Moon, an adventuring party known as The Killjoys took it upon themselves to assemble L'escalier du diable and break the impenetrable barrier segregating Valenacht from the Palace itself. They slayed a facsimile of Samael (the Smiling God's keeper, and the third aspect of the creature known as the Demiurge) and made their way to the main hall to return the Smiling God's essence to the Abyss.
The Killjoys successfully defeated the Smiling God, freeing the archdemon inside to return to their home plane.
