College of Truth
Sphere: Academic
The college of Science and Philosophy, teaching and researching out of Seven Tones Hall. While science is a relatively new field that few can see much merit in, philosophy underpins much of how the multiverse operates and a professor of philosophy can find themselves in high demand in Ur. Considered less respectable than the other two Colleges, the College of Truth pulls much of its membership from the middle and lower classes, but it is extensively funded by the Lost Society in their attempts to remove the need for gods and religion.
The studies of the College of Truth are much more difficult to conduct in Ur, at the heart of the Maelstrom, where magic warps everything to a degree and apparent certainties can suddenly twist and realign. Negation Crystal can suppress this effect to a degree - but has the odd side-effect of making Seven Tones Hall a deeply bleak and colourless place - it seems that in suppressing the natural magics of Ur, something else more vital has been suppressed as well.
Notable Departments
The Department of Phrenology has made strides recently in a scientific understanding of motive - ways to understand the thoughts of others. And without any invasive magic - just Measurements and the Scientific Method. And a certain amount of healthy speculation. The Department of Chrysopoeia has found a number of exciting procedures by which one substance may be mutated into another, without the application of magic. Eventually, they hope to surpass the limitations of Alchemy and create such valuable substances as gold without being bound by the law of equivalent exchange. The Department of Eschatology studies the patterns of endings and finality in the cosmos. Rumours abound that Lost Society money is pushing research into how those patterns might be manipulated, but these are strenuously denied by the College of Truth faculty as frivolous and unscientific avenues of investigation.
