Ahntier Senataris
The Senate of Ahntier is the heart of power in the empire. The most powerful and wealthy citizens sit on the Senate and legislate the law of the land. The perks and boons of senatorial membership are far reaching, and a child can often bank an entire career on the privileged and contacts garnered by a successfully political parent. Even those who have no ambitions for changing the world still vie for political gain as a means of reaching an easy life. But even these must be wary, for the ambitious rarely leave such leisure seekers alone in their own quest for power.
The life of a politician is one of gambits, deals, and secrets. Powerful factions run rivers of gold to bribe their favored senators, and powerful families go bankrupt countering with their own. Back room deals trading in favors with nothing more than a handshake and the promise of a dagger in the back to hold it together. Only to have everything lost when a popular figure simply rallies the people to drown out the noise of debate and force a law to be made. The Game is always in motion, and only those who can master such deceitful tides will ride the waves to the top.
Structure
Princept: This is the highest rank in the Senate. Obtaining this rank allows one to hold priority in all meetings and legislation, call or dismiss the assembly, and set the agenda of what is to be settled at a given assembly.
Arbiter: The Arbiters are judges of the law. On top of settling judicial matters in the court system, they are also in charge of seeing that no new laws pass that directly contradict or duplicate an existing law. The highest ranked Arbiter, called the Magos, is able to call the assembly to gather.
Legis: The Legis is a rank where many would be Senators settle, as it affords an amount of legislative freedom, with very little real responsibilities.
Tribune Civilas: Made up of lesser Senators, the Tribune Civilas is a possition associated with maintaining public works throughout the Empire. Not all Senators enter this level of the government, but it does have perks.
Questor: The lowest office of the Senate, entering the Questor is mandatory for position in the Senate. Once the duties of Questor have been fulfilled lifetime membership into the Senate is granted.
Rex Maxum: Also titled as King, this hereditary position is the remains of a previous monarchical system of government. While the monarchy technically still exists, the role of King is largely a figurehead, and a glorified tie breaker.
Public Agenda
The agenda of the Senate is split between powerful factions. In general it is agreed that the Senate seeks to expanding the territories of Ahntier and protect the republic. But how it goes about that is still up for debate.
Assets
The Senate controls the wealth of Ahntier, keeping lock and key on the treasury and collecting taxes from the populations. It is the Senate that can declare war, and appoints Primus to their Dominus. By law the Senate, as a whole, also owns all property within the Empire of Ahntier that is not a religious temple.
