Eastpoint Castle

Formerly the simple eastern most castle in Barony of Atlan at the border of Atlan and Barony of Mabon to the north, and the gateway to the wilder lands of the north and east, Eastpoint Castle is now home to a thriving town that serves the hardy humans of this desolate part of the Empire and the launching place for travelers, merchants and adventurers. To the south are the Sua Hills, to the north are the Dawn Forge Mountains and the Wild Reaches, and to the northwest is the Aebietus Forest (home to Aebietus high elves), to the west the Hercynian Wood (the home of Treants, Dryads, Satyrs and Centaurs), and to the southwest the Grugatch Forest (home to the Grugatch wood elves).   The population is about 900, with a number of outlying hamlets, farms and estates. The walled town itself has its own charter and is governed by the Council of Guilds, while the ducal seat is the Lord of Eastpoint Castle with the responsibility of securing the town and the surrounding lands.   Despite its small size, Eastpoint is an important hub for trade. The Shinning River becomes shallow at, so boat traffic has to stop. This traffic meets with caravans traveling north or south on the Trade Way. Thus goods, business, and taxes enrich what might otherwise be considered a petty, rural fiefdom.

Government

Eastpoint Castle is a the seat of Dukedom of the Inner Reaches. Eastpoint is the name of the town, which is nominally independent in its day to day operations.   The walled village with its central keep reflects its origin as the feudal seat of a lord within a much larger kingdom. Its customs and laws are holdovers from that time.   Rule is hereditary, and dukedom goes to the firstborn male. Anyone living in the lands claimed by   The town of Eastpoint pays taxes to the duke in coin and goods. All able-bodied people also serve turns in the duke’s army and must be ready to answer his call to arms, unless they pay scutage, buying their way out of service. Scutage, in turn, grants the duke funds to pay for full-time soldiers and guards, whom the duke uses to enforce law and custom. Those customs and laws include the guilds that control day-to-day affairs through a city council, the Council of Guilds.   Ducal Government:
