Barony of Mabon

The Barony of Mabon is large, geographically diverse, and exercises great power and influence within Fultar. Mabon's power is centered in the ancient city of Gebesh, which is one of the original Fultonian city states that has existed since time immemorial.   Despite considerable geographic diversity, Mabon is one of the most stable Baronies due to a strong nobility, limited social or economic disruption from international trade or invasion, rich agricultural landscape, and little need for the Imperial army to keep the peace. Mabon relishes its position as the breadbasket of Fultar, and cognizant and proud of the fact that it has not been corrupted by the influence of the urbane and foreign.

Structure

The Barony has traditionally and continues to have a strong and powerful Baron ruling from the capital of Gebesh.

History

The cultures of the Fultonian plains, including Mabon were the first to master the techniques of hoe agriculture and become stratified, which led to a more bellicose and productive society. They then developed irrigation agriculture and systems of trade and exchange. The majority of the population were peasant farmers who cultivated the land in the name of the gods. Technological and cultural innovations continued with greater social hierarchy, the increased use of bronze, greater specialization, the loss of control by individuals over basic resources and a dependence upon trade, a breakdown in kinship relations, and the use of writing. All eventually lead to the formation of city state and nation states ruled over by military and priestly elites.   Gebesh arose at the intersection of Fultar's mightiest two rives: the easterly flowing Lithium which merges with the southern Dadges that drains the Northern Fultar Forest and the Wood of Fletchin. Gebesh became an empire and assimilated the surrounding smaller, agricultural states.   Known next as the Empire of Mabon, it was rivaled by the city state of Fulton, both of which for centuries competed for dominance over Fultar. In later years the city of Atlan joined in the effort to become the principal empire in what is now known as Fultar.   Mabon suffered the most from two major Guar invasions, the last almost a millennia ago. Today, Mabon has more than fully recovered, and exerts influence rivaled and surpassed by only the city of Fulton and the Barony of Torana.

Territories

Mabon is divided into three separate and distinct regions.   First and foremost are the central agricultural lands, which are bordered by the Lithium River in the north and Dades River on the west, and the cities of Gebesh, Zhorph, and Ur. The vast majority of the population live here, and this is what both the people of Mabon and the rest of Fultar think of when the words "Barony of Mabon" are mentioned.   Next and to the south are the foothills and short mountains of the Sua Hills. These areas are wild lands in which live pastoralists and other freefolk. The border between Mabon and the Barony of Ashan is the Eastern Imperial Highway, and are primarily distinguished by the historical fact that dwarves never made this region their home. The bloody wars between humans and dwarves has not scarred the land or people of Mabon.  Despite this, the foothills and mountains are a dangerous place in which live orcs, gnolls and giants.   Finally, there are the Eastern Borderlands, which are made up woodlands, forests and hill country. During the centuries after the Guar Invasion, much of Mabon fell into waste and woodland. Over the centuries, humans have reclaimed and farmed these lands and continue to push eastward. Today, the Eastern Borderlands remain more free and less secure, but human civilization pushes further and further into the wilderness and lands of monsters with each passing year.
