The Terrin Royals

The Terrins were a small family living on the outskirts of Ishalla as self-proclaimed royalty from the barricaded city. This family was renowned for breeding the first generation of Origin Powers ever known in Tsilanda. At this point in time, the Terrin family has one of the strongest Water-based Origin Powers in existence, with Nika Terrin and Kian Terrin being the 9th Generation of this particular bloodline.

Structure

The family always consisted of the mother, the father, and their single child, until the child was old enough to rear children of their own, after which the partner became a partner (or prisoner) of the family. The mother and father controlled every aspect of their child's growth. The child is raised believing that they are a sort of prodigy and made sure to follow the family's agenda later on into their lives.   When a grandchild is soon to be born, the soon-to-be grandparents no longer have any use in the family. A ceremony is prepared in which the grandparents are killed by the next descendant, usually by drowning.

Assets

Massive amounts of gold and crystal coins from Ishalla, loved by Forest natives.

History

The 1st Generation

In 1565, life began for an Ishallan boy by the name of Isral Terrin. To the horror of his parents, he showed potential for Demon Powers a mere few days after his birth. During the Separation Era, Ishallan natives became intolerant of any individuals with powers. Isril's parents were gripped with a fear that their firstborn would be subjected to a life of humiliation, if not public execution, at the discovery of his new abilities. They may have been wealthy fishermen and respected by much of the Northwestern community, but if that community unearthed their child's connection to such powers... It would end them.   Isril's abilities were kept a secret from other Ishallan denizens from the moment of his shown potential, being lectured and beaten by his parents whenever he showed any initiative to use his powers. He kept to himself in their home by the Hamlda River and prohibited from going outside without supervision. His father and mother took on his birth-debt to the mines. Schooling took place within their home. For his 14th birthdate, Isril was approached by his father and given the choice between staying at home and helping him work the family fishing business by the Hamlda. The choice between boredom and freedom became clear to young Isril. He took on the work his father provided him and quickly bonded with his father over fishing by the river.   One day while fishing, Isril's father had his fishing line snagged on a large object, forcing him under the current of the Hamlda. In a moment of panic, Isril reached out toward his father under the water and stopped the current of the river from flowing. The river began overflowing near the bank. Realizing his intervention, Isril jumped into the water and saved his father from drowning, but not without earning countless suspicious looks from the nearby fishermen. Rivers, of course, do not care for human lives enough to stop in their path. At that point Isril understood that his powers were more unusual and greater than anything he could imagine. His father never spoke to him after this incident, and Isril's relationship with his parents deteriorated soon after.   The Officials made weekly visits to their home to sort out the rumors that surfaced about the family either having abilities or connections to someone who does. During that time, Isril's mother strongly encouraged him to find himself a lifelong partner to appear more "normal" in the Officials' eyes. Unknown to his mother at the time, he already found love with a female Ishallan, one who dreamed of escaping the city. A lucky break.   At the age of 21 he took whatever funds his conscience allowed from his mother and father and paid off people to smuggle Isril and his partner past the Ishallan Wall. The two of them found an abandoned building close to the edge of the Demon Forest by the Wall. At 24, with his now pregnant partner, he finally completed their renovations and claimed the house as the Terrin Royal Manor. With its completion in 1589, it was recognized as the official founding of the Terrin Family. They lived lavishly with their near-useless currency, able to trade with nearby cities only because it was coveted by the Forest's natives as a foreign trinket. When Isril's child was born, seeing that his child had inherited the same Water power he showed potential for earlier in life made him ecstatic. He claimed their lineage had connections to God-like beings, and that this ability only proved his point. He also believed that Ishallans were the only ones capable of producing perfect offspring such as his daughter.   From that point onward, he and his partner worked on raising their daughter together, rearing her to believe in Isril's- no, the family's cause of creating consecutive stronger generations of the Water Origin Power they now possessed.   The family started taking advantage of their new surroundings. Under no stress from the Ishallan government to conceal their powers, the family started improving upon their original powers and training their descendants as child soldiers and bodyguards. They had little influence on the land around them aside from what their trinkets of money can buy and stayed mainly within their chosen property, unbothered by others. They became known as a reclusive family and one of no threat, until their Energy grew to such an extent that it began attracting outside attention, mainly from the Demons who lived in the forest, fearful of the slowly growing power. But nonetheless, nobody intervened, and the family was allowed to live in peace. Eventually their money became their name, and they thrived off the rumors of being in charge of a secret government organization, or being dormant but powerful Demons, waiting to unleash their power upon the Forest.   Their Ishallan coins lasted through three generations, at which point the family began gaining money through extensive work as mercenaries and fighters in other cities.

The 9th Generation

Over many generations, the Origin Power the family possessed only grew in strength, up to the current 9th Generation, when twins Nika Terrin and Kian Terrin were born. Never before were twins been born into the family, and the assumption that both would inherit the powers of the bloodline was disproved as their potential showed itself in the upcoming years. Kian inherited the Origin Power, and the cycle continued. Nika however, born blind, showed no potential for any sort of powers for the first few years of her life. Kian's childhood was spent being coddled by his parents as the next inheritor of the family's great power, with everything continuing as normal within the family when it came to Kian's training. Nika however, was left mostly neglected aside from when both of them had schooling under the guidance of their mother. While their parents both trained Kian, Nika was left to her own devices much of the time, even being allowed to wander off the property as much as she wished, for she was no pride and joy of the family like her brother was. In her copious free time, she developed great potential for Healing through being able to revive small animals like birds.   When her mother discovered her amazing power, her attention soon shifted to training her daughter rather than investing her time in her son. For the first time in generations, the Terrin family switched their focus from the whole purpose of their existence over to learning about a new power the mother believed could be greater than the Origin Power they possessed. At first she was admonished by her partner, but soon both parents were coddling Nika. Kian, who was already accustomed to the attention he received on a daily basis, found himself becoming jealous about his sister becoming the new family joy. Kian started distancing himself from his parents, and by age 9 he became so emotionally detached that he drowned his mother and father, telling his sister that he had done so out of self-defense, stating that they beat him and planned to kill the both of them. Nika believed her brother, never having any reason not to trust her loving brother. The two of them believed they could provide for themselves and stayed in the manor until they met Kitasun and one of his disciples, Silver.   The two of them were brought to the house of Vin Corvil and lived with him for much of their lives thus far. Kian left at 20 to join The Resistance, while Nika prefers to stay with Vin and his family. Vin is the only living person who knows of their heritage. Kitasun and his disciple are the only living Demons aware of their heritage.   Kian now works for The Resistance as a squad leader and is known for his Water-based Origin Power, rumored to even be one of the strongest users of all time. He is also the host of Kitasun.   Nika lives under guidance of The Lake Spirit, serving as a Neutral Healer and is known to be one of the most powerful Healers in existence. She is also the host of Silver, one of Kitasun's disciples.

Disbandment

The Terrins were disbanded in 1784, when the oldest twin Kian Terrin murdered his mother and father out of jealousy for his younger sister. With the destruction of the family manor in the Terrin Province, the family was considered officially disbanded. Neither remaining descendant considers themselves to be a part of the Terrin family any longer.   The world does not know what happened to the family.

Territories

This family occupied a manor in what they called the Terrin Province, a flat forested area with no discernible landmarks aside from the original abandoned building located in this territory. The land known as the Terrin Province had no official borders nor flag, but was merely known as "the land surrounding the Terrin manor."

Tenets of Faith

The Terrin family maintained a strict set of rules that were never to be broken by any generations following Isril. Dubbed the Rules of Blood by Isril himself.
  • The bloodline must continue, no matter the cost.
  • The child is holy. The child means survival. The child represents one closer step to Higher Power.
  • The bloodline must contain pure Ishallan blood.
  • The bloodline cannot be tainted through outside corruption or Demonic influence.
  • Any Terrin who does not adhere to the Rules of Blood do not deserve their name. Only death greets those who do not wish to attain the Higher Power.

The Bloodline

Little did the family know, that the existence of their powers alone was proof that their bloodline was far from the pure one Isril believed it to be. Pure-blooded Ishallan Humans are not able to have powers of any kind. Through generations of contact and intermingling with Demons, powers began appearing in the children of these Ishallan Humans. This marked the end of any previously believed "pure" bloodline. Isril's faith in his abilities was flawed from the start.

Currency
While originally Ishallan coins, the Terrin family hoarded such a massive amount of these coins that they became known as Terrin coins in nearby cities. The coins were so rare in the Demon Forest that they were used for trading goods despite having no value outside Ishalla. While not recognized by the family as any sort of official currency, it was known throughout the Forest to belong to them.   It is because of the popularity of these coins that the family was dubbed the "Terrin Royals," because one of the more popular rumors associated with the family called them royalty from Ishalla. Rich folk were rare in these parts, so them being royalty was the only logical explanation for their existence.

Sounds cool

Really enjoyed reading your article and the story kept me interested all the way to the end. The sidebar was filled with information which is always great to see, and I loved how detailed the relationships between the organizations were.   Were there no guards or servants, or other random people around when the parents were drowned and how did he manage to pull it off?   Keep up the great work!

Thank you so much! I'm really glad you enjoyed it! Ah yeah, I believe I mentioned it in the article but if I forgot I apologize, but the family consists of ONLY the family members, meaning they had no guards or servants. They never hired anyone for the home. They lived like their own version of royalty but they kept to themselves.   As for the drowning, nobody was around for it. It involved only Kian and the two parents.

Quite an interesting article about a family, and good use of the sidebar. I would wonder, however, how this family is viewed by other families, both normal and royal. Are they extremely despised, or venerated and worshipped? You casually reference that the grandparents are drowned. Have grandparents resisted drowning? Were they drugged to make them easier to deal with?

Thank you very much! There's a few things I would like to clarify and also answer for you:   1. Honestly, this is the first sort of "family" I created for my story. While they existed before, since they were so secluded and did not interact with any other known families to me, I didn't even consider adding any other ones to expand on their relationship with one another. There are no actual royal families, the name was created by those who lived nearby and had no clue around the family or of Ishalla, so when they saw the manor and learned of all the money these people had, the rumor that started going around was that these people were some kind of royalty! There are no royal Ishallan families, just rich people. The name just stuck.   2. If royal families were to exist, I would imagine that they would despise this family, as the real royals would probably be highly disapproving of the Terrins claiming to be royalty. Since Ishallans side with their government much of the time, I would think that they would despise any group that goes against the law.   3. About the grandparents, I mentioned that a ceremony is prepared for the drowning, but I did not go into more detail about that, I'll be sure to add something after the competition is over. They did not resist the drowning. Once they get to that stage, they do believe that they've done all they could for the good of the family. No drugs are used, they accept their fate at the hands of their children. They see it as we see retirement.   Hope that kind of helps?

Yup. Nice article!

I really like the history of the family, the cool cult-like appeal and the poor misled nature of Isral gives them a Sinister yet oddly sympathetic feel to them. The only thing I would say though would be to expand what and how the Royals did their jobs, such as how they secured food and the Terrin Coin, who did they have relations to (outside of the Unknown Organization and Government, more like who the Forest Natives are) and maybe go into detail a bit on what achievements they had as mercenaries and soldiers.   Also: "the partner became a partner" : this is a bit awkward to read, I'm not entirely sure what it means. May need rewording.

Jan 27, 2019 06:04 by Charles Briggston

Thank you for your time reading it, I'm really glad you enjoyed it!   I meant to elaborate more on the food and how they gained whatever they needed, I think my poor decision was to allow that to be assumed by the readers by getting the idea of how the money was being spread out throughout the forest, but that was kind of a poorly thought out decision on my part. To give a bit of a better idea on that, the family was given food and water through their alliance with the Unknown Organization, the "illegal undercover organization." Other times, they hunted in the Forest as a way of bonding in the family along with training the next descendant of the Origin Power. Very VERY rarely, if the family was unsatisfied with whatever they received or their hunt went poorly, they would go out to a nearby town and either trade the food or their valuable coins for something else.   The Terrin Coin were normal Ishallan coins given to them from the Unknown Organization, as well as whatever funds Isril stole from his parents when he left Ishalla way back when.   The individual people they had relations to aside from the Unknown Organization and the natives in the Forest were very few, mostly travelers. Since they very rarely ever went out to towns, (which I did not mention in the article, my bad), they did not really have any particular individuals they had relations with. Some were travelers who took the coin then went back to their own home towns, and some natives in the towns really never saw them more than once in their lives. The only other individual who really played a role in the lives of the Terrins was Vin Corvil, but since he only helped Nika and Kian Terrin after their family had been killed, I was not sure if he should be written in the relationships tab for the family, but should probably be added for their individual pages? I'm not sure, I'd love to know what you might think about that.   As for their achievements as mercenaries and soldiers, they had nothing important of note. They did not really attract attention to themselves, and often times those in the family who fought in other organizations went under a different name. They were strong fighters and brought back new training methods they learned about in their organizations, but aside from that I can't think of anyone special. Maybe later.   Also yes... That was not intentional. Thank you for letting me know about that bit! That definitely is strange to read. I think I meant to write that the "partner became a PART of the family" and then elaborate on the prisoner part. Anyways thank you lots.

That clears up loads!   Also, I like the idea of Vin Corvil having his own relation tab. From this article along not a whole lot is known about the Vin Corvil house, and that would be a great way of expanding their relation as a whole and even a way to expand on Vin himself.   Also, in which case it would be interesting to note why they had to fight in the first place, unless it was for money in which case how hard must the time have been for the family to come out of their solitude and fight along side with people? (I'm imagining a little child of the house and it entertains me to think they are fighting along side their parent ^^;)   Now I need to sleep, its 6:30 D:

Jan 27, 2019 06:30 by Charles Briggston

Alrighty I'll add Vin here with his own relationship tab later, maybe that'll really help out, thanks! Also as to why they started their mercenary work, it's only briefly mentioned in the History, at the end of the 1st Generation part: "Their Ishallan coins lasted through three generations, at which point the family began gaining money through extensive work as mercenaries and fighters in other cities." Also sorry but I don't think they fought alongside their parents unless it was a freelance/ merc job, because when they worked in other organizations I don't think they would care much if a mom and child want to fight in the same squad together? If that makes any sense. Have a good night!

This is an interesting family you have.   I find the Two-Generations Only rule interesting, and I am curious as to how it started, as well as why are the grandparents deemed unnecessary for the family.   In your Structure part of the article, you say the family is of the parents and "their single child," but you reference "their children" and then twins at the end, which really threw me off, since I was trying to figure out why the family would stick to a single child until I saw they didn't.   You've got a great article, and I look forward to seeing it develop later on!

Thanks for reading! I'll do my best to make it more thorough after the competition, so no edits right now! Glad you enjoy it so far.   The grandparents are seen as they are in order to teach the family to cut ties with people they care about. The parents' main priority is meant to be the child, and having grandparents in the mix spanning across multiple generations can lead to discourse and more people to take care of later down the line. This way, the parents are stuck following a script with no extra hands to help them, no other opinions given, and nobody controlling their parenting, they simply follow orders left behind for them.   And yes the family is meant to have only one child. Twins were rare to have in Ishalla, and the family has only ever had one child born from any generation aside from the twins who appeared in the 9th generation. They stuck to one child simply because they never had two in the house before. Twins were new and they had no idea how to deal with them.
