Perilous Place

The Perilous Place is a bridge that connects the two halves of the city Perilun. What gives the bridge its name is the design philosophy of Mangodd Bloodclaw, its creator, who intended to make something that looked like the most dangerous structure in the world, but would be so sturdy that it could withstand anything.

The Narrow Bay

Between the cities of Peripet and Lunif, there once was an uncrossable body of water known as the Narrow Bay. However, it was only the size that intimidated people, as its waters were calm.

Peripet and Lunif

The Perilous Place united the two cities, crossing over the Narrow Bay and ultimately allowing them to realize they would work better together, creating the city of Perilun.   Therefore, the Perilous Place serves not just as a decorative crossing, but the only thing that connects the two major districts of a city that otherwise would be two separate locations.   It is therefore necessary for running the city, ensuring that both sides have the proper resources, and communicating with families, friends, and communities in the city.   All of this centered around a bridge that shakes slightly with every footstep that treads on its surface.

The Structure

The Perilous Place is incredibly tall, made of what appears to be wood that stretches from one side of the bay to the other. However, it is only covered in wood, while stone and cement lie underneath, allowing the wood to mask the true durability of the bridge.   It sways in the wind and when larger objects are put on them, but this is not due to it being moved by them. Instead, it is a clever contraption in the bridge that allows the wood to react to these stimuli while the stone and cement stay in place, giving the illusion of movement.

Creation

The Perilous Place was built to connect Peripet and Lunif, and the architect known as Mangodd Bloodclaw was commissioned. Mangodd had built things in worse conditions, such as the city of Roaroux, which sat at the edge of the Strait of Ildial, constantly flooded. Thanks to Mangodd, it could withstand that.   Mangodd knew it would be a simple task, so he had the idea that the Perilous Place could give off a look of being more dangerous than it is, and decided to test how far he could push that.   The design he made was deemed too dangerous, but it was too late. It stood between the two cities, and the mayor, Rhushar Skyswift, insisted it had to be torn down. But Mangodd challenged him.
"Test it out. Ride a carriage across the bridge. Put me in the carriage. If the bridge fails, I die and no longer stay in your city. If the bridge succeeds, I ride away in the carriage with my payment."
— Mangodd Bloodclaw
The carriage of Mangodd Bloodclaw made it across safely, and he was paid handsomely for his creation.
During some wars, particularly against Dwarves, the Perilous Place has been targetted by attacks, the enemy of Perilun hoping to cripple the city, only for the bridge to withstand them and remain intact.   This is because Mangodd Bloodclaw did not intend to make just a bridge. His intention with the Perilous Place was to create an illusion of danger and a community that would uphold that illusion for him, while instead creating security and prosperity for that community in return. His plan, of course, succeeded, and the Perilous Place is the symbol of a city that, otherwise, never would have become what it is today.
