Phoenix Character in Toriel | World Anvil

Phoenix

Spirit of Fire

The Phoenix is an elder elemental on the Elemental Plane of Fire. Only one phoenix can exist at any given Time, with an infinite cycle of birth and Death. The phoenix also represents the spirit of fire and an ancient and powerful force.   The four primordial elemental spirits (air, earth, fire, water) are often referred to as the princes of the apocalypse.

Characteristics

Abilities

Jade, host to the phoenix power, found her form increasingly unstable, unable to contain the immense power. Eventually, the phoenix consumed her, granting the ability to shift between humanoid and firebird forms.

Worship

Those elemental spirits are worshiped by certain creatures and cults. The methods for summoning elemental spirits remain hidden in forbidden tomes or inscribed on the walls of lost temples raised to honor the spirits. Only casters of superlative skill have even the faintest chance of calling forth one of these spirits, and the spellcaster is often destroyed by the effort. Thus, only the most unhinged and nihilistic members of Elemental Evil cults attempt such a summoning, in the hope of hastening the world toward some cataclysmic end.   Releasing the phoenix from the Inner Planes creates an explosion of fire that spreads across the sky, fire raining down from the sky, and meteors of magma falling down on the earth. The enormous fiery bird forms in the center of the flames and smoke — an elder elemental possessed by a need to burn everything to ash. The phoenix is as chaotic as the fire and rarely stays in one place for long as it strives to transform the world into an inferno.   To rise like a phoenix from the ashes — so many use that quaint colloquialism. Little do they know the truth about the true horror of such a rebirth.

History

Genesis

In the beginning, the world that would become known as Toriel was ruled by the elementals. Without a spirit of the weave to create balance, the elements were thrown into chaos. The four princes of the apocalypse, who each ruled over innumerable lesser spirits, constantly clashed with one another on the surface of the primordial world. The phoenix employed brute force to destroy his enemies and longed for nothing more than to boil the seas and choke the skies with ember and ash, and wherever he went, volcanoes erupted, spewing forth rivers of fire. The other three Elemental Lords came to foster a deep hatred for the Firelord for his devastating and brazen assaults.   When the gods arrived, the Elder Elementals saw the invaders as a threat to their dominion. For the first time in Toriel's history, the native spirits of the world worked together against a common enemy. The Phoenix's fiery servants joined with the Elder Tempest, creating blistering firestorms and cyclones of flame that reduced the Old Gods' citadels to ash.   Eventually, however, the world could not stand the princes of the apocalypse power, and with the help of the gods, they were banned out of Toriel, into planes that later became the elemental plane corresponding to each Elemental lord.

Corruption

The Elven Rebels, driven by the belief that the power of the phoenix was necessary to destroy the empire and birth a new elven kingdom from the ashes, sought to corrupt the spirit of fire. Guided by druids from the Circle of Wildfire , they sent scouting parties with the intention of weakening the phoenix before attempting to control it.   However, their plan took a dark turn as the corruption drove the phoenix into madness. Its once radiant flames turned black and purple, unleashing destruction upon everything in its path. In response, a group of adventurers, collaborating with the rebels, embarked on a journey to confront the corrupted phoenix.   Upon reaching the enraged spirit, attempts to communicate failed, leading to a fierce battle with the six adventurers. Orianna and Nep suffered severe burns during the encounter, bearing scars as Galad Ithil rushed to protect and heal his companions. Simultaneously, Jade's powers surged uncontrollably.   In a devastating attack, the corrupted phoenix engulfed Jade in flames, its talons piercing her heart. The phoenix was ultimately defeated, turning into ashes. Despair settled among the adventurers at the loss of their friend. A flame emerged from the hole in Jade's chest. Her heart blazed with fire, and she opened her eyes, miraculously revived by the power of the phoenix.   Jade was born with a small portion of the phoenix's power, and the circumstances allowed the spirit of fire to nest in her heart. The power of the phoenix now resided in Jade's heart, destined to grow too powerful for a human form. In the years to come, she would burst into flames and transform into the spirit of fire.   Empowered by the spirit of the phoenix, Jade continued her quest against the elven rebels, utilizing the formidable power within her to defeat them and secure freedom for the Kingdom -o Qwir. With her mission accomplished, she felt the call of the Plane of Fire growing stronger, signaling that the time for her transformation into the phoenix had arrived.   Acknowledging the inevitable, Jade embraced her destiny and returned to the Plane of Fire. There, in the heart of the fiery realm, she became the phoenix.
