Galad Ithil Character in Toriel | World Anvil

Galad Ithil

Men use beautiful words like justice to hide ugly desires like revenge.
— Galad Ithil
Galad, the elven king of Kingdom -o Qwir, bears the marks of a seasoned adventurer. Soft-spoken and conciliatory, he transforms into a divine force when provoked. guided by Selune's blessing. His evolving worldview embraces pragmatism over rigid morality, prioritizing the preservation of life. Keeping others at a polite distance, Galad conceals his worries about the looming threat of Tana's Empire, working tirelessly to strategize for an inevitable confrontation. His journey from a backwater village acolyte to a reluctant leader is woven with challenges and prophecies, culminating in his unexpected ascent to the throne during the Elven Rebellion.

Characteristics

Physical features

He is tall, with a surprisingly muscular build and the calloused hands of a man used to hard work. There are light wrinkles on the sides of his strikingly green eyes, a sign of the weight of his position, and a scar on his jaw from a fight against frost wolves. His long hair turned into a lustrous silver during his adventures, although not even he is certain if that is a sign of Selune or premature aging brought about by his adventures.

Mental traits

A soft-spoken man with conciliatory words, he becomes divine fury embodied when provoked into action, and Qwir's enemies know to steer clear from the soft glow that marks Selune's blessing upon him. Those who deal with him also know better than to try to deceive the elven king; a Magic pair of earrings clinks softly whenever a lie is told in his presence.   Galad's worldview changed much in his adventures. At first, he was quick to act on a black-and-white morality, considering it his duty to pass judgement on wrongdoers. Still, during the attack on the elven rebel base that would eventually lead to his group siding with the rebels, he began to question if blind obedience and a strict application of the law were always correct. He would eventually conclude that preserving life should always come first. That too was a view he would regret as too naive; in his desire to minimize bloodshed, he felt he failed to protect his companions. The man that bears the crown is pragmatic in his dealings, putting the safety and prosperity of his subjects above all else.   He keeps others at as arm's distance with an air of aloof politeness and the occasional joke. None but his most trusted advisors know of his worries. The ver present shadow of Tana's empire keeps him up at night, working out plans for an inevitable confrontation.

History

Backstory

Raised in a backwater village, Galad was eager to learn about the world from the travelling priest that visited them, and once of age, joined him as an acolyte of the Sisters of Selune. After being fully invested, he traveled for several years in the lands of the empire, until one day he received word from his old mentor, of worrisome prophecies of impeding calamities. Asked to investigate, he headed to Megima, a hotbed of monster and rebel activity. Paying his respects to the local nobleman, he saw himself roped into an arrangement to keep a group of troublemakers out of prison.

Campaign

In the tumultuous events of the Elven Rebellion, Galad's connection with Selune faced trials and tribulations. Weakened by doubts and choices that strayed from his moral compass, the link was revitalized when the goddess guided him to save Megima in the aftermath of the Elemental Plane of Fire and Feywild incidents. Despite numerous obstacles, Galad's wisdom and composed demeanor led him to ascend to the throne as the king of Kingdom -o Qwir, a role thrust upon him by his companions who recognized his leadership qualities.
