Selune Character in Toriel | World Anvil

Selune (pronounced sɛˈluːnɛ)

"Let all on whom my light falls be welcome if they desire to be so. As the silver moon waxes and wanes, so too does all life. Trust in my radiance, and know that all love alive under my light shall know my blessing. Turn to the moon, and I will be your true guide."

Goddess of the moon

Selune is a moon goddess. Often depicted as an elf as it is one of the form she takes when incaranting on Toriel, she is the considered to be the patron god of all moon druids. Reverence for Selune is not limited to the elves, however.

Characteristics

Physical features

When guiding or advising her followers or observing the affairs of mortals, Selune sometimes assumes the form and appearance of an elf with a slender build. In this form, she has long, flowing white hair and pale, white-blue eyes.   In her true celestial form, Selune appears as a blue-skinned humanoid with pointed ears. She wears a crescent-shaped piece of jewelry on her forehead, from which intricate white glowing tattoo lines radiate.

Worship

Selune's aspect known as the Moonmaiden emphasizes tranquillity and harmony to allow for the greatest nurturing of Toriel's creatures. However, Selune does not advocate pacifism in the face of threats to her harmony and tranquillity; novices in the Sisters of Selune are trained extensively in tactics and combat under the moon goddess' aspect of the Night Warrior. Selune expects devotion from her priestesses, but never demands they give her every waking moment. Druid of the circle of the moon often tends to worship Selune too.

History

Relatively little is revealed about Selune's true origins and background outside of mythology. A well-organized priesthood devotes itself to the service of Selune. The highest echelon of this order is known as the Sisters of Selune, and as the name implies, membership in this echelon is open only to women, on the belief that Selune's deepest mysteries can only be understood by a woman's heart. The war chants of the Sisters can call down the Night Warrior's wrath to smite their foes, and their prayers to the Moonmaiden can nurture even the gravely wounded back to health.   Selune has never been observed in physical form on Toriel, but she has often been depicted as an elven woman of transcending beauty and perfection, with long and silvery hair, and eyes of pure moonlight.

The Night Warrior

Strongly associated with healing, tranquility and harmony, Selune is a goddess of peace, but she is not always a pacifist, as she does not advocate peace at all costs. One of her aspects is the Night Warrior, who takes the valiant among the dead and sets them riding across the sky as stars. The Night Warrior is the incarnation of Selune's wrath.

Ancient times

Myths surrounding the two moons of Toriel are numerous when one of them is believed to be Kur's heat, the other was for a long time believed to be the dark reflection of the material plane, a portal to the shadowfell, bringing despair to Toriel. The night was always linked with the unknown, with dangerous monsters, and with death, it is normal that the celestial objects lighting those dark moments are surrounded by myths. People keep fearing the celestials objects but worshiped their protective light, worshipping the moon goddess Selune.   The goddess Selune was said to be disappointed in the God Goldrinn's feral insistence. It was his unwillingness to tame his savagery and bloodlust that overshadowed his noble heart. When Selune's great moonlight illuminated the dark during the full moons, it was as if her eyes glared down upon him in judgment. His anger at her conviction caused Goldrinn to become even more bloodthirsty and indomitable than ever.   Recorded history shows that formal worship of Selune dates back to at least 5,000 years. However, it is certain that the moon goddess was being revered through more primitive and decentralized methods long before this. The first known center of devotion to Selune was established by the elves within their ancient civilization. Worshiper of Selune, called Sisters of Selune forming a religious order.

Recent times

In the era after the War of the Ancients, devotion to Selune had essentially become universal but was practiced without centralized places of worship, much like in ages past. The Sisters of Selune.
