The Elder Tempest is an elder elemental on the Elemental Plane of Air. Only one elder tempest can exist at any given time, a new one arising if the previous was killed. The elder tempest also represents the spirit of air and an ancient and powerful force.
The five primordial elemental spirits (air, earth, fire, water, weave) are often referred to as the princes of the apocalypse.

Worship

Those elemental spirits are worshiped by certain creatures and cults. The methods for summoning elemental spirits remain hidden in forbidden tomes or inscribed on the walls of lost temples raised to honor the spirits. Only casters of superlative skill have even the faintest chance of calling forth one of these spirits, and the spellcaster is often destroyed by the effort. Thus, only the most unhinged and nihilistic members of Elemental Evil cults attempt such a summoning, in the hope of hastening the world toward some cataclysmic end.
Terrifying storms manifest in the body of the elder tempest. A being carved from clouds, wind, rain, and lightning, the elder tempest assumes the shape of a serpent that slithers through the sky. The tempest drowns the land beneath it with rain and stabs the earth with lances of lightning. Punishing winds scream around it as it flies, feeding the chaos it creates.

History

In the beginning, the world that would become known as Toriel was ruled by the elementals. The five princes of the apocalypse, who each ruled over innumerable lesser spirits, constantly clashed with one another on the surface of the primordial world. The elder tempest was the most cunning of them all, sending his minions to spy on his enemies and sow distrust among their ranks. He would pit the other lords against each other, only to then unleash the full fury of his servants on his weakened foes, sending lightning and cyclones to ravage the world's surface.
When the gods arrived, the Elder Elementals saw the invaders as a threat to their dominion. For the first time in Toriel's history, the native spirits of the world worked together against a common enemy. The Phoenix's fiery servants joined with the Elder tempest, creating blistering firestorms and cyclones of flame that reduced the ancient gods' citadels to ash.
Eventually, however, the world could not stand the princes of the apocalypse power, and with the help of the gods, they were banned out of Toriel. The essence of these primordial beings fractured into the elemental planes, where they were reborn as elder elementals—now known as the Princes of the Apocalypse.
