Batara Character in Toriel | World Anvil

Batara

Demonlord of Destruction

Batara is a Demonlord of the underworld, where he reigns supreme from his dark and ominous cave. He is well-known for his insatiable hunger and is considered a harbinger of destruction and chaos. Batara is often depicted as chasing the moons and sun, with the goal of consuming them.   In addition to the moon and sun, Batara is also said to enjoy devouring children who wander from home or come from families considered to be bad. There are varying legends about Batara's origins, some see him as the son of Pelor, while others view him as an Ogre who was once mortal but gained power through the corruption of the Abyss.   Although Batara is not worshiped in the traditional sense, he is widely recognized and feared by many. He serves as a reminder of the power of the abyss, and his unchecked rage is a cautionary tale for those who dare to venture in the abyss. Additionally, Batara serves as a deterrent against having children out of wedlock or through incest, instilling fear in those who would otherwise engage in such practices.

Some followers of Batara even seek for the celestial objects such as the two moons and the sun to disappear, fueling their desires for darkness and destruction. These worshippers see Batara as a powerful force who can grant them their wishes, and they are often willing to perform acts of violence and sacrifice to appease the demonlord. Despite their evil tendencies, they are steadfast in their devotion to Batara, seeing him as a force to be reckoned with and a powerful ally in their pursuits.

History

Batara was one of the demonlord commanding the lgeions of Demon invading the prime material realm during the War of the Ancients.   It is Batara who met with Nymue Loth when she pretended to betray the Elf and join the demons, discovering her plot to seize the Dragon soul. But Batara was pleased with this plan and gave Nymue a gift in return for her allegiance. Nymue's eyes were burned out by Batara, and orbs of magical power set their place that allows Nymue to see all forms of Magic, and tattoos covered her body.   When Nymue's eyes were burned out, she also received a vision of the true strength of the demons. She resolved then to find a way to defeat them for good. Batara was fascinated by the Nymue, but remained cautious, sending his demons to accompany Nymue in her search for the Dragon Soul.   When the Dragon Soul came into the hands of the demons, they went about using it as a focus to strengthen their portal to Toriel. Nymue reunited with the elves, which now greatly mistrusted her after seeming to betray them and hand over the key to victory to the demons. But working alongside the dragons, they worked to retrieve the dragon soul from the demons clutch and to save Alexstrasza.
