The Breaking

The visual appearance of the Breaking belies the true danger that lurks within. To view it, the Breaking only seems like a faint heat shimmer in the deserts surrounding Ars Aurum, perhaps slightly more blue or purple in color than the typical haze. At night, especially in the light of the red moon, the disaster's true nature is revealed. What could be confused as a mirage in daylight is shown to be a blackened portal twice as tall as an orc into worlds beyond, a mirror and gateway to worlds beyond Tollomai. It is a rift in the Veil, a Gate that cannot be closed and does not require the consent of the mortal races to allow passage. From the Breaking, Outsiders pour forth, attempting to break free of the Keep of the Breaking and enter the world to enact their dark designs. Only the constant vigil of the Order of Watchers keeps the world safe from these horrors and with every passing year, their numbers grow thinner.

History

During the Ascendancy War, battles between The Archmage and The Possessed tore open the veil and created the Breaking, which the Archfiend, Outsider of overwhelming power and evil, was quick to exploit. No ordinary Gate could allow it to enter Tollomai and The Possessed was unable to fully open the Great Gate as planned, but the Breaking provided a way for Outsiders loyal to the Archfiend to slip into the world of their own accord and without making pacts or deals with the mortal races.   The world would have been lost if it were not for the Order of Watchers, who built a fortress facing inward to surround the Breaking and dedicated themselves to eternal vigilance to defend the world at large from the monsters that lurk within.
