The Red Mother

During the Ascendancy War, the Seven and One turned on one another. What started as simple disagreements over rulership, boundaries, or family turned into bloody battles where thousands were left dead every day. Some thought themselves lucky to be in territory claimed by the Archmage, the Possessed, or even the Tranquil, who did not field armies when they went to war with their neighbors. Those who thought they had been spared the horrors of the Ascendancy War quickly learned how wrong they had been.   The greatest battle between the Possessed and the Archmage was fought near Ars Aurum, which the Possessed had claimed as his seat of power. While they battled with arcane magics beyond even that of the great masters of the Si'ylan Empire, the Possessed and his followers opened the Great Gate and called through the Archfiend, a being of such incredible power that the Possessed believed his victory was assured and that he would sit at the right hand of his patron in the new world. At great cost to himself, the Archmage was able to slam shut the Great Gate, but in doing so he tore open a hole in the world. It was too small for the Archfiend to enter Tollomai, but could not be closed. Hordes of lesser Outsiders flooded through the Breaking and savaged the world with both claws and their own corrupting influence.   The people of Ars Aurum took up arms against the Outsiders, but could not hold their homes against creatures beyond mortal ken. The entire region might have been swallowed by Outsiders as the Possessed licked his wounds and cared nothing for his people's suffering, were it not for the Red Mother.    Her origin is shrouded in mystery. Some claim she is the first Champion of the Order of the Vigilant Watcher at the Keep of the Breaking, though the Order disputes this. Some claim she is an Outsider herself. Others say she is a facet of the Godhunter or a powerful Ascended dedicated to protecting the world from Outsiders. What the people of Ars Aurum do know is that without the Red Mother, their city would have been lost. She fought at the Breaking day and night and bought time for the mortal races of Ars Aurum and its countryside to begin to build the Keep of the Breaking. Her lessons in fighting Outsiders became the first combat training that the Order of Watchers would receive. It took a century, but the Red Mother and her daughters bought enough time for the world to contain the Breaking.   The Red Mother remains a constant enemy to Outsiders in Tollomai but rarely strays far from the Breaking. She and the Order of Watchers have a tentative peace due to their shared enemy, but neither would call the other a friend. In the modern era, with the Breaking contained, the Red Mother relies on her daughters to seek out and destroy Outsider cults and put down monsters that appear in the world of their own doing. She continues her quiet existence as an almost mythical figure, often revered by those who live in the areas surrounding Ars Aurum.

Reign

Though the Red Mother and her daughters are quiet on the matter, it is known that through some powerful magic the Red Mother is capable of creating surrogate copies of herself, which she refers to as her daughters. Once created, these children are not bound to their mother except through bonds of love and reverence. Most live solitary, wandering lives, pursuing some enemy that has escaped the Red Mother or seeking to reach and purify a portion of the world that the Red Mother cannot reach.  Though so rare as to be unknown on much of the continent, the presence of a daughter of the Red Mother is cause for celebration and festivities in the villages of eastern Tollomai.
