Ünivis III

Grand Prince Ünivis III Godhzoko of Ibza Xüfonz

He's just the latest in a long line of inbred pricks, and somehow even more obsessed with maintaining his power than his predecessors. He fights us so viciously because he knows that if he slips for a moment, it will be his last on the throne. We must keep fighting.
— Ibza Xufonzayo Raiser
Grand Prince Ünivis III is the current ruler of the Principality of Ibza Xüfonz, having ascended to the throne 14 years ago in 25 Return. An absolute monarch notorious for his unwillingness to negotiate with anyone, he is ill-liked by his subjects and those of neighbouring countries.

History

When he was born, Ünivis was the youngest of the three children of Princess Chörri. It was assumed he would never ascend to the throne, as his uncle Vaiken VI reigned as Grand Prince and was still young enough to bear his own heirs. As a result, Ünivis was raised less as a ruler and more as any rich noble might be, given access to the finest education Ibza Xüfonz could provide. During his early childhood, he showed a great aptitude for more athletic pursuits, being an excellent horse rider and highly competent fencer.   This carefree childhood was attacked piece by piece by family tragedy. Illness swept the royal household, claiming the life of his older brother in 11 Return, and causing great pains to his older sister and his uncle. Though both survived, they were greatly weakened, and the seasonal flu unfortunately killed his sister later the same year. His uncle's health remained poor, never quite returning to pre-illness levels.   In 12 Return, Ünivis was removed from his athletic classes and instead given extensive tutoring on matters of diplomacy and statecraft, as his mother feared he might ascend to the throne in future with little preparation. Ünivis was deeply unhappy with the change, and did not excel in his studies.   In 16 Return, Vaiken VI's health took a sharp plummet, and he died early in the year. His mother became Chörri III, and it became unavoidably clear that Ünivis would probably serve as Grand Prince after her. This appears to have set in motion Ünivis actually trying to learn the skills required for his future job. However, he was still bitter over the loss of his athletic hobbies, as his mother banned him from many for fears he would be injured.   His young adulthood prior to his ascension was mostly uneventful, barring an incident in which he spurned the affections of Princess Ainish of Dätsalöl. This surprised many, as the two had been reasonably close during their youths and their families had a long history of intermarriage.   He remained unmarried up until his mothers death in 25 Return, after her health took a sudden turn in a manner very similar to her brother. With his ascension, and his position as the sole survivor of his branch of the royal family, the matter of heirs became urgent. In rather short order, he proposed to a lady named Chairri Kostrothe, most famous for being the older sister of the leader of the Northern Sun. While this union sparked great controversy, he would not be deterred, and the two were married early the next year.   His reign has been received poorly by both his subjects and the international community, as he has spurned any contact with the neighbouring Pris Xüfonz over the ongoing territorial dispute, and threatened action against neutral parties like the Wardens of Strelish over their interactions with Pris. He is also especially authoritarian compared to his predecessors, only delegating slivers of his absolute power to a precious few. This has sparked conflict with the significant Raiser populace in his principality, with Ünivis demanding his guards to arrest all who champion democratic values and to actively seek out resistance movements.

Family Ties

As Grand Prince of Ibza Xüfonz, Ünivis descends from a long line of Xüfonzayo monarchs dating to 5 Reconciliation. He has no siblings or living aunts or uncles, with his closest Xüfonzayo relative being his cousin Konaike. Through various intermarriages, he is strongly related to the King of Dätsalöl, Zoivas I. Through his marriage to Chairri Kostrothe, he is the brother-in-law of "Sunny" Kostrothe, head of the Northern Sun crime syndicate. With Chairri, he has had four children, though the oldest died in an unexplained accident in 34 Return.

Dätsalöl and the Sun

Ibza Xüfonz has been close to Dätsalöl for many years, and it shows in the complex web of family connections that has been built over time. At minimum Ünivis III and Zoivas I, as well as Zoivas's sister Ainish, are first cousins and second cousins simultaneously, sharing all the same grandparents.   Though he is loath to discuss the matter publicly, rumours are that he had been planning to marry Ainish, but his mother's declining health caused him to abruptly end the relationship. As his mother's illness and death were very similar to her older brothers, Ünivis likely thought the family lines had interbred to such an extent as to be unhealthy.

There are few other reasons the public can come up with to explain his sudden split with Ainish and his subsequent marriage to Chairri Kostrothe. Through a foggy lineage, she is believed to descend from a king of Na-ochiixid named Bogako IV, one of the last kings of that land.   This royal lineage made her a suitable match for a Grand Prince, despite being some 240 years removed from actual royalty. Many joke that more important than her distant nobility was that she was willing to marry him, as Ünivis was deeply unpopular with foreign princesses.
