Newgate District of Len Doa

Newgate is a neighborhood in the northern section of the City of Len Doa. It is centered on the gatehouse that allows travel on the North Road to pass through the outer city wall, commonly known as the "new gate". The district is administered for the Lord Mayor by Alderman Regis Gabrix, a wealthy and very influential Gnome of the district.   Newgate has the largest population of Gnomes in the entire northern Kingdom, fully 2,500 Gnomes call this portion of the city home. It is the center of a very dedicated and profitable gem and jewelry industry that has grown up in the city over the last 50 years. There is also a large and very busy weapons manufactory located here, operated and owned by a renowned smith named Daymin Hardhand.  In addition, there are as many as 1,500 Human residents, as well.   Homes in the district are usually multistory stone structures with as many as four or even five floors. Specialty workshops and businesses are operated on the street level, with residences stacked on the upper floors. Gnomes are rather famed for preferring to live in tight quarters with large extended families, so the density of the local population is quite high here. A single four-story rowhouse might have as many as 30 or 40 residents, all living and working close to the home.   Construction is of the finest type and material. Stone is fonely dressed, streets are smoothly paved and well drained with deep gutters laid down the center of each street and alley to drain water away from buildings. Many of the streets and alleys of Newgate are well lit with bright brass and glass oil lanterns. Trash and refuse are removed daily and streets and paths are swept by local residents routinely. The City Guard is frequently seen patrolling the avenues both day and night, and they are much appreciated by the locals.

Purpose / Function

A prosperous and elegant portion of the city, with many fine stone buildings, specialty shops, exotic foods, straight and smooth streets well-lit with bright lanterns at night.  It is the largest concentration of Gnomes in the entire northern half of the High Kingdom of Imesse.

Architecture

Homes and buildings are of clean, well dressed stone with slate and tile roofs.  Most windows are glazed and many streets are brightly lit at night with oil lamps.  Streets are well-drained with deep laid gutters down the center line of each street to carry away rainwater and manure via sewers to pits located outside the city walls.

Defenses

The City Guard maintains a constant presence in the district.  Due to the large number of gemcutters, metal smiths and jewelers in the area, the threat of theft is real.  In addition, there is a Guard Company barracked at the gatehouse at all times.  It is tasked not only with the wall defenses for more than a mile, but with regular patrols along the North Road and adjoining streets outside the city walls, as well.
