Shirefield District of Len Doa
The Shirefield District is a part of the City of Len Doa made up almost exclusively by Halflings. It is located just outside of the eastern city walls and extends all the way to the shore of the Eastern Sea. It is nearly two square miles of amazingly picturesque gardens, orchards and small fenced pastures dotted with small clusters of multi-story structures that more than 3,500 Halflings call home.
The neighborhood is relatively new when compared to the rest of the city. Having suffered a devestating fire that razed the entire area 55 years earlier, the clean up and restoration effort was very slow and under manned for nearly a decade after the fire. Then a group of Halfling families asked to be allowed to live in the neighborhood on the condition that they could rebuild it as they saw fit, rather than rebuild what had already been destroyed. The reigning Duke (the current Duke's grandfather) agreed, and the small community of families began their work.
In the nearly five decades since, the area of Shirefield has become one of the most amazing sights to be seen in the entire City of Len Doa. Acres of lush green gardens, verdant orchards and compact but very productive pastures provide an abundance of produce, eggs and meat for the local markets and a fine and lucrative living for the more than 3,000 Halflings living and working in the district.
The District is administered by an appointed official known as the Lord Sheriff. While the Shirefield District is not, strictly speaking, a "shire", the title was granted in consideration of the amazing work done by the original families that rebuilt the neighborhood in such a beautiful and dramatic fashion. The Lord Sheriff is the equivalent of an Alderman from any other portion of the city, and while candidates for the office are locally nominated by residents and presented to the Duke for his approval and appoinment, the Duke could appoint whomeveer he chooses to the office. To date, only the nominated local favorites have ever received the Duke's appointment. The current Lord Sheriff is Cotman Potter.
Alterations
Over the last 46 years, the area known as Shirefield today has become one of the most picturesque places in the entire City of Len Doa. Where old and ancient row houses had once stood amidst narrow streets and alleys, one now finds acres of lush gardens full of flowers, vegetables, fowls and fruit trees. There are small but productive orchards growing pears, apples, cherries, plums, apricots, nuts and berries of all sorts. Where once dark and delapitated warehouses stood one now sees neatly fenced yards where sheep, hogs and goats graze and browse contentedly. These animals produce vast amounts of mik, wool, meat and fertilizer that is sold at the local market every third and fifth day of the week.
Defenses
The District is considered a part of the City of Len Doa and as such it is routinely patrolled by the City Guard. In keeping with the current Duke's wishes to defer to local resident's considerations, the Captain of the Guard assigned to Shirefield has always been a Halfling veteran of the Duke's service.
Tourism
Just outside of the Shirefield Gate and 300' to the south is the Rothman House tavern. In one of the few significant sized buildings to survive the fire that devestated the neighborhood some 50 years earlier, the Rothman House is a large two-story structure that has a large communal dining hall, a kitchen and a large pantry on the first floor and a smaller residence for the owner and his family on the second. There is a small yard on the south face of the building that can hold up to four horses, but no stables are offered. There are no rooms to be let at the Rothman House.
